[DEOC] Thoughts on Multicultural Graduation

Hi Luz,

I think it always good to evaluate the intentions so please let me know how I can support. At CPTC, our Multicultural Office for Student Access and Inclusion Community (MOSAIC) Center (which used to report to student success and now reports to EDI) will be hosting a multicultural celebration this year. We are not going to call it that but that's essentially what it is. It isn't a graduation ceremony (nor do I have any interest in duplicating a commencement ceremony) BUT it is an optional opportunity to celebrate our graduates in culturally affirming ways that center them and also to support the logics/distribution of a cultural identity stole that they can wear on actual commencement day.

This will be the first time we are doing this and I'm not going to concern myself with the pushback but I imagine it will come. If and when I get it, I will have plenty of data to site as evidence for the need from our campus climate survey. The goal is to never need these and to actually shift the culture of actual commencement.

Hello family,

I scheduled a conversation with various representatives across my campus on Monday regarding a multicultural event on campus. In preparation, I've been exploring what the history of the event is at our campus and elsewhere.

CBC has held this event the last few years, but people have reported to me that they were planned in haste which means we may have missed the mark on its intention. I also heard that there was some pushback about it encouraging segregation and a step backward for equity. While the benefits of such events can be quite meaningful for participants, I know this debate is the case at other college campuses as well.

If you could spare a couple minutes, please respond:

  1. If you have one, what does a multicultural graduation event look like on your campus?
  2. If you don't have one, why not?
I appreciate anything else you can share on the topic.

With care,
~Dr. Luz
