Hello CATO colleagues,

I understand you are still taking feedback on this proposal. We shared the proposal with our Accessible Technology Committee at Highline, and gathered the feedback below.

We look forward to further refinement of this idea.

The “Accessible Technology Service Center” name is great.

The preference we heard was for a mix of the two, with a focus on the services provided in Option 2 (centralized database of test results, central testing of high-priority items, and lots of training for accessibility activities distributed to the colleges).

Overall, the idea of the service center fixing college web site accessibility problems was viewed as difficult to implement and less valuable:

  *   For us, SiteImprove has proven effective at identifying issues; perhaps a system contract for that or a similar tool, and maybe some training would be a more workable alternative.
  *   Once issues are identified, college web site compliance isn’t super complex. Colleges should have those skills if  they’re going to get a web site.
  *   Mechanics of access to college web sites would be challenging

A center that focused on system-wide issues would be the most helpful, would offer the best economies of scale, and possibly be easier to get buy-in across the system. The system-wide issues we identified as amenable to a central agency were:

  *   Verification/testing of commonly used administrative apps, from ctcLink to Google Apps, to MS Office.
  *   Verification/testing of widely used instructional resources, e.g. library databases, textbook sites (MindTap, etc)
  *   Version tracking and updating of both of the above categories
  *   Centralized database of those results
  *   Accessibility mods for Legacy and Link tools (e.g. college application app)
  *   Training for system staff and faculty, including campus-level developers, webmasters, faculty, and admin staff (e.g. staff who create forms in Excel for travel paperwork

The idea of “trusted testers” was well received as well.
