Yes, the natural science does need to contain a lab component.

Hello,

I am referring to the new approved general education requirements for BAS degrees. Does the Natural Science have to have a lab component?

Hello,

Instruction Commission approved the attached general education requirements for BAS programs on Friday, May 20th.

Highlights of the changes:
General education minimum requirements changed from 60 to 50

  *   10 credits Communication Skills
  *     5 credits Quantitative/Symbolic Reasoning Skills
  *     5 credits Social Science
  *     5 credits Humanities
  * 5 credits Natural Science with lab component
  * 20 credits of 300/400 level distribution coursework or electives from the ICRC Handbook generally transferable list of courses

This is effective immediately.

Established programs are NOT required to but CAN change their program general education requirements through their college's curriculum process.
New programs in development can use the new guidelines right away. Remember, the attached is a minimum and programs can require more general education when/if appropriate for the program(s).

The new requirements will be updated on the SBCTC, BAS website.

I would like to thank the members of BLC that worked to bring this proposal forward and engaged in meaningful discussion focused on students!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Connie Smejkal
BLC, Chair
