Subject: Fall 2020 Prelim Enrollment

This message will be distributed broadly to the college system.

Dear State Board members, chancellors, and presidents,

As of the 10th day count for fall 2020, full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment is down 13.5 percent compared with the same time period for fall 2019 (10th day 2019 to 10th day 2020). FTE enrollment is down across all fund sources:

  * Total FTE: down 13.5 percent
  *   State-funded FTE: down 15.3 percent
  *   Contract-funded FTE: down 9.2 percent
  *   Self-funded FTE: down 7.5 percent

Two programs that saw FTE increases in spring 2020 also experienced FTE enrollment increases in fall preliminary counts:

  * Bachelor of Applied Sciences FTE: up 7.8 percent
  * Running Start FTE: up 2.4 percent.

Not all program and demographic information is available in the preliminary snapshot, but the data do indicate continuation of some characteristics we saw in the spring 2020 quarter. Students ages 30 and older experienced more significant enrollment declines than their classmates under the age of 30, and professional/technical programs experienced more significant enrollment declines than transfer programs. Final fall enrollment data will provide a more complete picture once it is available.

If you have questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to Travis Dulany in our Policy Research Office. tdulany at sbctc.edu<mailto:tdulany at sbctc.edu>

Sincerely,
Carli Schiffner
