[BLC] Washington's Annual Applied Baccalaureate Conference

Greetings and Happy Thanksgiving!

I just want to bring attention to the most recent and successful annual Washington State Applied Baccalaureate Conference held on November 14, 2017, at South Seattle College's Georgetown Campus!! This conference provides professional development opportunities for community and technical colleges developing new applied baccalaureate degrees or refining existing programs.

The sessions this year provided a wide range of training for faculty, program managers, directors, and administrators with sessions including but not limited to providing undergraduate research opportunities, financial aid implications, employment outcomes, joint program development, library considerations, and best practices for creating effective management structures while addressing future challenges. Sessions tracks were also available for those seeking more foundational knowledge to those colleges with more established programs. The conference was opened with an insightful presentation by Pierce College Chancellor Michele Johnson who shared Pierce College's transition to offering applied baccalaureate degrees, the importance of eliminating terminal degrees and providing a variety of pathways for students, and implementation factors that should be considered as our system grows in offering these degrees. The lunch keynote was provided by Shaunta Hyde, Managing Director of Community Relations at Alaska Airlines and former chair of the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, who shared her experiences with the approval of applied baccalaureate degrees and words of wisdom for those colleges considering developing a new degree and possibly going in front if the State Board for the first time. In recognition of her efforts as a pioneer with this work, Shaunta received an achievement award for her "dedication to the innovative development and implementation of applied baccalaureate degrees for Washington state's community and technical colleges."
