San Diego State University's Senate Passes Historic Resolution To Improve Training of Future Law Enforcement Officers

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to share an update regarding a resolution that was passed yesterday by the University Senate at San Diego State University (SDSU). As many of you know, I serve as Chief Diversity Officer at SDSU where I advocate for many of the strategies and practices that my colleague Frank Harris III and I have shared in our webinars over the years.

In the wake of the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and Ahmaud Arbery, we felt compelled to engage our faculty, staff, and student leaders in conversations around concrete action. We are now implementing a new "Race-Relations in Criminal Justice<https://sdsu.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10bb7244109314734b3013b28&id=700316ed27&e=a988636aed>" requirement for graduation.

As your colleague, I challenge you to ask your colleges and universities to pass similar requirements. Now is the time for action, words are not enough.

This requirement mandates that all students earning a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice take coursework focused on the dynamics between law enforcement and Black communities. The resolution also establishes a mandatory on-boarding training for entering undergraduate and graduate students on racial biases and racial equity. Further, the resolution establishes a new course on race relations and policing that will be made available at low-cost or no-cost, to law enforcement and other agencies affiliated with the criminal justice system across the nation.

I hope you all will take on this: Black Lives Challenge.
