[Wactclc-primo] Advanced searches failing in Seattle's Primos

I found out more about the “List of Languages” in Alma Config:

  1. The List of Languages table (under Alma Config > Discovery > Display Configuration > Configure Views > [View] > Advanced Search Configuration tab > List of Languages) seems to only be used in Primo’s Advanced Search screen.

Now that I write that out, I suppose it makes sense given the name of the Tab the info appears under. 🤦‍

  1. If you check the box to “Sort by alphabetical order”

This alphabetical sort applies to the Language filter drop-down list in Primo’s Advanced Search-- With the caveat that whatever is in Row 1 in the List of Languages table in Alma config will be set as the default language filter for Advanced Searches.

Checking this box doesn’t change the order of how the languages show up in the Config table on the back end.

  1. If you uncheck the box to “Sort by alphabetical order” then the Advanced Search Language filter drop-down will sort in exactly the same order as the List of Languages table in Alma config. Whatever is in Row 1 in the List of Language table will be set as the default language filter for Advanced Searches.

  1. This List of Languages in Alma Config has nothing to do with the filters that show up under the Language Facet after performing a search in Primo.

Language Facet filters appear to be automatically mapped from codes that exist in whatever metadata records display in the search results.

For example, we don’t have Tagalog in the List of Languages table in Config, but if I perform a search for “water” in Primo, Tagalog shows up as a filter under the Language facet in the Primo Facets sidebar.

This may be old news to those of you who’ve worked with Primo more than I have, but it has some implications for us when it comes to languages used by our patrons that aren’t included in Primos default settings.

It will be ok!

Big thanks to Carleigh for figuring this out so quickly!

Yes, we made changes to our Primo Language Facet last week to add language filters for languages we know are spoken by our students, faculty and staff (Vietnamese, Amharic, Tigrinya, Somali).

We did this in Alma Config > Discovery > Display Configuration > Configure Views > [View] > Advanced Search Configuration tab > List of Languages

We do know that just because we can filter by a language doesn’t mean we have any materials in that language. We still wanted to have the option.

We set the List of Languages to “Sort by Alphabetical order” not having any idea that whatever language is first on the list is automatically set as the default language in any Advanced Search.

The language that ended up first on the alphabetical list was Amharic. It turns out we don’t have much in Amharic.

Carleigh reordered to put the “Any” language option at the top of the list.

My learning process has definitely been enhanced by this mistake! 😉

It will be ok!

Hi everyone,

It was an issue with the language selection in the Advanced Search Configuration. It has been restored to 'ANY' and is working as expected.

Yay! Easy fix. No idea how all three views got strangely ordered languages, but better to be functioning than investigating.

Hi folks!

One of the librarians at North Seattle noticed yesterday afternoon that all Advanced searches were failing for her in Primo.

Any Advanced Search returned “No results” but a Basic Search using the same terms returned results.

Our examples:

  *   Author: Brene Brown
  *   Title: Chip War
  *   Anything: Race AND Education

We’ve confirmed that this is happening in all 3 of our Primos.

In the course of opening a high priority ticket with Ex Libris, I searched 3 other WACTCLC Primos to see if the problem was more widespread.

Highline, Spokane, and Lower Columbia—You’ll be happy to know that Advanced Search is working in your Primos!

Anyone else may want to check Advanced Search in their Primo. If you run into the same problem, you can mention our case (07062778) in your ticket.

It will be ok!
