[Wactclc-alma] SMS notifications from Alma

We talked some about this in the call today.

I'll mention here that the "letters" in Alma that apply to SMS are any of the Alma letters with 'SMS' in their name.

Alma generates letters based on those templates, which are going to be more terse and more suitable for texts.

Then, those SMS letters get generated in the same way that email letters do, through fulfillment job configuration and overdue and lost loan profiles.

The difference with SMS letters is that they get output and dumped to an SFTP server, where your SMS service would pick them up and send them out.

So, your SMS service needs to be able to import files, parse out the XML of the letters, and then send the letters via SMS. Or, if that's not something the SMS service can do, then you need some other process to prep the texts before they get handed off to the SMS service.

Is anyone using SMS (text messages) rather than or in addition to email, to send students their library account related notifications?

If so, could you describe the service provider that you use and whether it's part of a larger college contract or if it's contracted only by the library? Our college is now texting students with announcements so some of the infrastructure might be in place, but I want to better understand the framework and requirements before I potentially broach the subject with our communications department.

I have already skimmed the Alma documentation on "SMS Communications" and "Configuring S/FTP Connections" and also the developer network document on "SMS: Overview."<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdevelopers.exlibrisgroup.com%2Falma%2Fintegrations%2Fsms%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cmelinda.martin%40scc.spokane.edu%7C3e907cda26a04c7efb0408da1e56cfd8%7C4dedfefa6bd04442a06c98aed0b4b8da%7C1%7C1%7C637855655445487403%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000&sdata=fhnXJLSFr%2Fj2Z2RlfEuzp2XmGt%2FDOdzfV3m7ZmQtClI%3D&reserved=0>
