[Wactclc-alma] Are you adding the WSL Gale collection?

One rationale for *not* buying in is that it will be available in the public libraries, by and large.

Which opens the content to a lot of the CTC population, who have public library access.

I like the concept of ‘database noise.’ That seems like a very valid consideration.

Unified searches like Primo VE and Summon can help reduce that noise, by providing a single search. But to a certain extent the noise just gets pushed from the users to the back office, onto staff doing all the management.

Another option would be to buy into the content, and not worrying about integration into the library platform. Just link out to Gale. For everyone already using Gale products and having a current Gale EZProxy stanza, there wouldn’t even be any config necessary there.

(What we need is a statewide electronic resources library 😊)

Hi all,

Is this an appropriate place to have a discussion about Gale? Or should I send something to CLAMS/CLAWS instead?

I think it’s tempting to add several databases for $700, but it kind of feels like getting a free puppy (versus a free beer.)

There will be the maintenance of these new databases (Alma/Primo, EZProxy, etc.) plus the idea that the state is paying 75% for now, but eventually $700 would become $2800. Additionally, our librarians are concerned about the number of databases and database noise right now for students.

Like I said, I can take this chain to CLAMS or CLAWS, but thought I’d start here. :)

Thanks!
-Lesley
