I asked Will that question today and here is his response:

"Normally, we subsidize 50% of the cost. By subsidizing 75% the first year, we've cut your price by half, yet again.

We actually considered making it totally free for everyone the first year, but unfortunately, that turned out to not be a practical option, due mainly to the administrative work required to support all of the K-12 schools and school districts. So we opted for the 75% subsidy instead. This gives everyone the chance to try out the Gale resources for a VERY minimal cost the first year.

Next year, we will adjust costs based on who actually signed up this year, and the updated FTE counts from especially private academics and the special libraries (I don't have a reliable public source for those numbers). But with a 50% subsidy instead of 75%, your cost will be approximately double what it is this year. Which is still significantly lower than what you were paying for the ProQuest package."

Hi all,



Is this an appropriate place to have a discussion about Gale? Or should I send something to CLAMS/CLAWS instead?



I think it's tempting to add several databases for $700, but it kind of feels like getting a free puppy (versus a free beer.)



There will be the maintenance of these new databases (Alma/Primo, EZProxy, etc.) plus the idea that the state is paying 75% for now, but eventually $700 would become $2800. Additionally, our librarians are concerned about the number of databases and database noise right now for students.



Like I said, I can take this chain to CLAMS or CLAWS, but thought I'd start here. :)
