For some of you digging more deeply into metadata, this is a good opportunity (see thread below) to get some exposure to the so-called semantic web<https://www.w3.org/standards/semanticweb/>, built around linked data.

I honestly haven't followed this stuff very closely so far. But it will eventually be important. Even just as a consumer of research data, or as someone supporting the use of data on various platforms, vendor and otherwise.

A cool example of linked data real-world use is making metadata available for indexing and searching in places like Google Search, in ways that MARC isn't designed to enable.

Subject: Enabling Discovery with Linked Data! -- An IGeLU/ELUNA LOD Community of Practice meeting on December 9, 2021.

Greetings,

Over the years, Ex Libris has developed a suite of linked data features and tools. The IGeLU/ELUNA Linked Open Data Community of Practice Working Group will hold a series of virtual meetings to showcase these features and discuss what works well and what needs improvement.

The first meeting in the series will focus on two Ex Libris's tools, Primo Sitemap<https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Primo/Product_Documentation/Primo/Back_Office_Guide/080Primo_Tools/The_Generate_Sitemap_Tool> and Author Card<https://developers.exlibrisgroup.com/blog/simple-linked-data-powered-author-card/>, that libraries can use to optimize the discovery of their collections. The meeting will begin with two presentations:

Utilizing Ex Libris Linked Data in SEO and Beyond

Presented by Quinn Hart, University of California Davis Library

Author Card: A Linked Data-Powered Tool for Discovery

Presented by Greta Heng, University Library, San Diego State University

We will then continue with a moderated discussion about the two tools, with questions and ideas from the audience (that's you!). Questions may be added to this document<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1o_IwCCp2A7Dds5rqiHAk_N51gbkQK4V6uMFoI-3QnBc/edit> in advance or asked during the session.

If you are interested in attending the meeting, please register here<https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZckdO-grz4sH9K836pNe6u3Rct475WakKcx> by December 8, 2021.

Look forward to seeing you!
