[Wactclc-alma] Information about self-checkout stations?

I'd say that unless you often have lines at the circulation desk, or know that you have patron demand for using self-check, I wouldn't pursue it.

You do need some dedicated self-check hardware if you want to do it, typical vendors are 3M and Bibliotecha. It's a few thousand to several thousand dollars for a typical unit.

And you do need to integrate Alma and the self-check hardware via the SIP2 protocol, which requires some IT involvement.

So, as far as resourcing it, you've got to budget for the hardware, plan for a few days of back and forth with IT for the implementation. And then ongoing care and feeding, both on the staff and patron side.

My guess is that there are other things your time and money could be used for that would have bigger impact on student outcomes.

But situations vary. So, it may be just the thing you're looking for, if you've a problem it can solve or service it can deliver.

Subject: [Wactclc-alma] Information about self-checkout stations?

Hi, All -

If you have set up a Alma self-checkout computer for your students, can you please tell me a little bit about the project? Things I'm interested in include:

Materials required? (A brand new computer, for example?)
How difficult or easy was it to configure?
How long did it take to set it up?
Any things you wish you had known before you started?

Thank you!

Laura Staley / RTC Library
