[Wactclc-alma] Course Reserves - starting; maintaining; best workflow practices

Thanks for that link, Charly. That’s a good one.

And I will add course reserves workflow as an agenda for tomorrow’s call.

Some of you with some course reserves experience in Alma share your own workflows with the group.

You can also do so on this list, of “course”. ☺

Just as a starting point, I would say major decision points in course reserves workflow include:

1. How you decide or identify the courses to set up in course reserves?

2. How do faculty communicate to the library what needs to go on reserve for each course?

3. How do you handle a course with multiple sections? Do you use a single uber reading list, shared by all sections? Or, do you add separate course sections, with different reading lists for each? (That answer may vary by sectioned course.)

4. How is your library staffing course reserves work? At the circ desk? In technical services?

5. How do you manage course reserves from quarter to quarter? Do you expire your courses at the end of each quarter, so that they become inactive automatically? Or do you set an expiration date out in the future, and manage course activation / deactivation manually?

Hi Colleen,

If you haven't already, I'd start with this overview of course reserves<http://exl-edu.com/01_Alma/Alma_Essentials_New_UI/Fulfillment/Course_Reserves_New_UI/story_html5.html> provided by Ex Libris. It will provide the general framework for developing a workflow.

Hello everyone,

I am still relatively new to Alma. My institution is looking for some advice on developing a Course Reserve workflow. We have manually added a few academic departments, but that's as far as we've gotten.

Who handles Course Reserves at your institution?

What steps should we take first to get started on the right foot?

Should we add all of the course manually first and then start entering detailed information about each course one by one?

If you have an academic course with several sections, how to you input those into Course Reserves? Do you give each course section a new unique course code or do you just not worry about course sections?

That's probably enough questions for now. We just need some guidance on how to get started, and best practices moving forward.

Thank you for helping.

Best,
