[Wactclc-alma] multiple records in numerical order

FWIW, Pierce numbers our laptops and Chromebooks in the description field and this is what our “List of Items” looks like in Alma.

That number is duplicated in Enumeration A and Copy ID

Valerie,

Where are you trying to sort? On an item display screen? In an Analytics report?

There are a bunch of places where Alma uses what’s called an ASCII sort—digit by digit—which looks something like this:

1
10
100
11
110
12
120
2
20
200
21
210
22
220

Depending on where you’re storing the number you’ve assigned to your Chromebook, you may want to enter the numbers with 3 digits:

001
002
003…
010
011…
095…

We have 95 Chromebooks in one record titled “Chromebook”. They are assigned with numbers 1-95 but the records are not in order by that number. Currently, there are a couple of places the assigned number appears, we have not been consistent with the records but we will fix that.
If we were to place this assigned number in, say, the description space would we be able to sort them by that number? Is there another field that would work better?

What I’m ultimately trying to do is get them into numerical order by the assigned number (not barcode)…and keep them that way when we add more Chromebooks.
Thank you for any suggestions,
Valerie
