I agree, Lesley. It’s a real challenge to separate out local vs CZ titles via a top level facet like MyInstitution.
We can spend some time on the call tomorrow talking about this topic. And what the options are for custom local facets.
I don’t believe PVE behaves different in this regard than traditional Primo behaved. You can look at the (traditional) Primo search at U of Puget Sound<https://alliance-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primo-explore/search?tab=default_tab&vid=UPUGS&sortby=rank>, and see that their local facet also includes CZ titles.
One change over time might just be the growing number of active CZ titles we have in our respective Alma instances.
Just looking at the IPEDs dashboard for Pierce (which includes title counts for electronic collections), you have 310,021 electronic titles in Alma currently. I’m sure others are in a similar situation. Those numbers are completely dwarfing truly local collections.
I’ll look and see if any idea exchange posts talk about this one. Adding a facet filter for record source (CZ vs local) does feel like it would be technically possible.

Thanks, Wade. As always, I appreciate your thoughts on this.
I think I have identified my frustration as this system feeling like it was designed without thinking about libraries at all.
We will definitely explore the physical scope Ryer and others mentioned. And, I’ll offer the “At the Library” scope mentioned by Dan and Naoko.
Sorry for the tangent, all!

>> We don’t own the second or third result so it just seems silly to me that it would be included in the “MyInstitution” scope.
But you do own access to them, correct? So, in a sense, they are part of your institution, as long as your access lasts at least.
The main difference to remember between MyInstitution and Everything is that ‘MyInstitution’ contains only title citations, while ‘Everything’ contains both title and article citations.
The best way to address this might be by changing the labels in Primo.
Though, I’m hard-pressed to label them in a way that would make sense to retail users.
Maybe MyInstitution is labels “Books, Journals and Videos”
Another option is to have a physical only search, and then the Everything search.
I’m trying to think how this is handled in other contexts, like iTunes, Google Scholar, Netflix, Amazon, etc.
How do other widely used content platforms distinguish between subscribed and owned content (which I think is where the scope confusion is coming in?
No doubt, it’s a brave new content world out there ☺

Hi all,
Sorry for the misinformed email yesterday. I am going to share this with our reference librarians and I’m hoping one of you can help me articulate the difference between “Everything”… (10 million results)
[cid:image001.jpg at 01D5C9FA.CF4FAD10]
And “Library Catalog”… (6,500) results
[cid:image002.jpg at 01D5C9FA.CF4FAD10]
First of all, the top three are still the same. :P
Is it really just PCI activations making a 10 million item difference?
And when we move the CDI, which is in Alma, then all 10 million items would fall under Library Catalog?
I don’t know why, but this is making me super grumpy. We don’t own the second or third result so it just seems silly to me that it would be included in the “MyInstitution” scope.
Okay, end rant…maybe.

“Available in the Library” is also the filter that I use and teach students when I/they want physical materials only.
I didn’t know about the locking function, that’s super helpful!!!

Hey all,
We use the "Available in the library" facet in lieu of using a dedicated physical item search. We like to use it as a way of introducing facets to students who may not have used them in a scholarly setting before.
Naoko, regarding your comment about having to re-apply the facet every time the search is modified, remember that you can lock a filter into place by hovering over the left-most part of the label in the "Active filters" listing:
[2020-01-09 09_18_44-Window.png]
This will allow you to change the search query and execute new searches without having to re-activate that filter.

I am curious, do people strongly prefer having a custom scope for physical item search to using the filter "Available in the library" after the initial search? Our librarians seem to be ok with using the filter although it's a bit annoying we have to re-apply the filter every time the search is modified. I can see custom scopes are useful for targeted audiences, maybe to be used in a widget or for some kind of automated feed. I haven't configured any custom scope because no one has asked me for one, but I'd love to play with the configuration.

Agreed. Our librarians wanted to be able to search only physical items in the catalog and so I created a custom scope for physical items with a location in our two campuses and I called that scope “In the Library.” We are still deciding whether we want to change that physical location scope to be our “Library Catalog” because that’s how everyone traditionally understood our catalog to be. Of course, then it wouldn’t include ebooks.
It certainly is more complicated than our old Millennium days…

There are ways to configure the custom scope to really zero in on a certain part, or parts, of your collection. As Wade shows, for just books you use conditions to limit by resource type=book. I’m less sure on the need for two layers of available physical=exists, but maybe that helps accuracy.
I have found that you can get very granular and specific with your local collection. It is more difficult (at least it has been for me) to get accurate when working with the “everything” scope.

Traci,
The scope being used for that search is ‘MyInstitution’ (&search_scope=MyInstitution in the URL)
That scope includes all title records in Alma. Doesn’t matter the format (book, journal, etc).
Basically,
MyInstitution scope = titles-only search
Everything scope = titles + articles
If you want a books-only search, you need to set up a custom local scope based on resource type, something like the following, and then assign it to a search profile and slot:

Articles and eResources

Hey all, has anyone seen an issue like this? I search for books and eBooks in the drop-down, and get journals and other resource types returned. I have to click a second time to limit to books using the Resource Type facet. This obviously is annoying and potentially confusing to the general user. Why not just disable these specific searches if they aren’t accurately doing what they say they should do?
