[Wactclc-alma] Some issues with Newsbank from another perspective

I don’t know if seattle colleges will be able to afford newsbank, but I think it’s a product worth keeping.  Being able to limit searches to publications from a specific geo region and access international perspectives is a boon for my international business students.  Having the WA newspapers is critical for local research.

This is our experience with Newsbank and Carla as well.  I’m not crazy about Newsbank, and most assignments that assign newspapers have gone away anyway.  Which I guess begs the question… Thanks, Claire

Hi Lesley:

At Skagit, we took part in the trial this past year. After speaking with the Newsbank sales rep, and realizing what the pricing would be, we don’t think that we will be purchasing Newsbank once it isn’t free. We aren’t getting the usage of it that we thought we might, so I don’t think it’ll be a huge loss to have this resource disappear.

My experience with Carla is that she is a super persistent sales person and the fact that they were the only ones who had Seattle Times full text was a huge plus. However, if it comes down to Newsbank vs ProQuest, ProQuest wins in our book. Our students need much more than just a bunch of daily newspapers…

Hi all,

Can we have a conversation about this? Pierce College has not yet started the trial, but I’m on the webinar now.

Has anyone opted into the trial? Our team was concerned about starting a trial on something without clear pricing, and we weren’t sure if it was a true need for us.

What is the state’s vested interest in this?

Please help me understand why this vendor is getting such a huge spotlight. Are the Pierce College librarians missing something that our students need?

I just wanted to forward this to you since some of you are considering Newsbank. Turns out there are some issues that KCLS has raised that kept them from selecting Newsbank as one of their databases. From Samantha Everett, the Vendor Relations Manager:

KCLS is aware of the free trial of Newsbank through the Washington State Library and we declined to participate for a few reasons.  The vendor, Newsbank, could not give us online accessibility information and every resource we add must have some kind of accessibility or plan for development.

We also felt the contract was really restrictive in terms of interlibrary loan and the sharing of documents.  It also had some other restrictive contract language about which library card users could use it, etc.

As a workaround for patrons who really want to access Newsbank we refer them to get a free ecard through the Washington State Library (any resident of WA State can sign up for one) or use their reciprocal Seattle Public Library card, etc.

I think the accessibility piece is worth following up on. I imagine Newsbank may have updated their stance toward accessibility since not getting KCLS as a customer, and obviously we all too are concerned with accessibility plans. I have not had that convo with Carla yet—has anyone else?
