I haven’t. Thanks for the head’s up. And thanks to Amy and Dan for their comments too.

Hey Kirsti,

Have you seen the PDA (instead of the DDA) model that Kanopy created? LWTech helped “develop” it a couple years ago and tested it out when it came out because we couldn’t afford anything else. I think a lot of CTCs opted into it since its creation, because it’s much cheaper.

A few random thoughts…

It’s not feasible or sustainable to attempt to monitor *why* individuals are using a resource. I’d also argue that monitoring the reason why an individual is using a library-provided resource runs afoul of the American Library Association Code of Ethics:

We protect each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.

If you’ve got a 1-year or 3-year license for a Kanopy title, then you’ve got unlimited views and it shouldn’t matter to the library why someone is watching the video.

That said, there are very real budget issues with Kanopy that can’t be overlooked. One of my libraries has a reduced book budget this year due to problems with the Kanopy DDA (Demand Driven Acquisitions) program. In short, Kanopy continued to allow views of videos after our account limit was reached, resulting in the library “purchasing” 1-year licenses on a bunch of titles that we hadn’t expected or budgeted for. When we looked at the use data for the DDA titles that had triggered the purchases, we saw that many of them were feature films that people watched on weekends. We inferred from the use data that people were watching the videos for non-academic reasons (but we don’t know that for sure).

The library budget couldn’t support the level of use Kanopy was getting. So that library turned off the Kanopy DDA program and went with direct-order only. It’s less user friendly in that students and faculty can no longer see and search all the titles available in Kanopy. Instructors have to work directly with library faculty to identify titles they want to license through Kanopy.

The other one of my libraries that’s using Kanopy has a larger budget and has left their DDA program in place (I think?). They’ll license specific titles if faculty contact them and let them know it’s needed for a course. This library hasn’t run into the problem of Kanopy allowing views over the budget limit. They’re in the second year of their Kanopy DDA program and are still deciding if DDA is worth it to them.

I think you could also reasonably make the argument that personal use is de minimis for something you’ve already licensed. It’s when personal use is triggering a three-figure purchase that you get into a problem area. Rather than focusing on the reason for use, it’s easier to configure your Kanopy account to minimize the chance of the library paying for a license for something that doesn’t directly support the curriculum.

Hey all,

Not so much an Alma collection but a resource question.

I've been told about a conversation a few years ago about switching to Kanopy and what it might mean for our faculty and employees. The chief concern is, are faculty allowed to use Kanopy for personal use? It's a resource paid for with state funding, so personal use should be prohibited; on the other hand, if a faculty member wanted to come check out a fiction novel for some beach reading, we wouldn't block that.

If you have Kanopy, what do you tell your faculty and employees?
