[Wactclc-alma] What is a Recall in Alma?

What Tammy said—Patron A has something checked out. Patron B needs to use it. The library notifies Patron A that they need to bring the item back right away so someone else can use it. Sometimes this means Patron A has their loan period cut short.

Seattle Colleges has such short loan periods (2 weeks) that we decided trying to manage recalls would be more trouble than it was worth. All our Fulfillment Rules are set to not allow recalls.

FWIW, the Washington Administrative Code section for your institution will have regulations governing certain library policies like recalls. For example, here’s the section for Seattle Colleges:

WAC 132F-162-110

Holds, recalls, and searches.
(1) Holds: A borrower may place a hold on any circulating material except reserve material, some special collections material and library materials already checked out to that borrower.
(2) Recalls: Library materials for which another borrower has placed a hold may be recalled after two weeks from the date checked out. Material on long-term loan to faculty maybe recalled at anytime. Material needed for reserve may be recalled at any time. Material checked out to noncollege borrowers may be recalled at any time for use by an on-campus borrower.
(3) A search may be requested by borrowers who have not succeeded in locating material on the shelves.

Our loan periods are only 2 weeks to begin with and we don’t do long-term loans to faculty. Only 1 library allows guest patrons and they don’t have that many at any given time. If something needed for Reserve was checked out, circ staff would just call or email the patron directly to return the item.

Given our short loan periods, we can just have a patron place a hold if they want something that’s checked out. The hold will block the item from being autorenewed and the patron who has it checked out will receive a notice to return it by the due date. Circ staff can see if an overdue item has a hold and can contact the patron directly about returning it ASAP. As far as I’m concerned, this meets the WAC requirements for recalls. 😊

It will be ok!

Recall means to ask that a book that is checked out be returned early because someone else needs it. This sometimes happens when, for example, a grad student checks something out for an entire quarter or year and a faculty member needs it before the checkout period is up. The book is recalled and the borrower is sent a recall notice which may or may not include a deadline by which to return the book. One option in Alma is to charge a recall fine if the item is not returned by the new recall deadline.

Subject: [Wactclc-alma] What is a Recall in Alma?

Hey all,

I can’t for the life of me figure out what “Recall” means in Alma. The fulfillment page<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fknowledge.exlibrisgroup.com%2FAlma%2FProduct_Documentation%2F010Alma_Online_Help_(English)%2F080Analytics%2FAlma_Analytics_Subject_Areas%2FFulfillment&data=02%7C01%7C%7C7431cdf14b6a4a6f86fa08d704d41ae7%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C636983181352281639&sdata=yXz%2BKoe6rIWVYm6qwwNOz8VSpQqk3ix%2BiDadzR1zoRA%3D&reserved=0> in Alma doesn’t have any definitions, nor does any other page it seems.

Can someone explain what a recall is, in a relatively straightforward way?

Thank you!

Greg
