[Wactclc-alma] Quick cataloging resource type

Good question, and Hannah gave a good answer.

A couple of related points to note...

In the MD Editor, you can more easily see the fixed fields in a record by using Edit / Open Form Editor, after you have loaded a record into the editor. The form editor gives you useful labeling for the different values in the leader and 008.

Also, you can save a bib record as a template, and use that as a basis for new records. This kind of template would come in handy when creating new equipment records from scratch, say.

After creating a MARC records to use as a template, and creating the fields that will be common for that kind of record, go to File / Save as Template. You can then use that template when creating new equipment records (https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Documentation/010Alma_Online_Help_(English)/040Resource_Management/040Metadata_Management/050Working_with_Templates )

Finally, as Hannah mentions, for large record sets, it can be useful to create a normalization rule, and run a set of records through that rule. Here is a document that describes the basic workflow for that: https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/@api/deki/files/57066/Rules_-_How_to_add_a_normalization_process_to_Alma_and_run_it_on_a_set.docx?revision=1

Creating normalization rules is a separate topic, for which there is a lot of documentation and examples in the knowledge center.

You can edit the bib record after you make the quick record to change the LDR and 008 to what you need for whatever resource type you want, though there isn't a good one for equipment (Kit, maybe, or 3D artifact?) - the rules are here https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Documentation/010Alma_Online_Help_(English)/010Getting_Started/050Alma_User_Interface_%E2%80%93_General_Information/Searching_in_Alma#Rules_Used_to_Create_the_Resource_Type_Field_MARC_21_KORMARC_and_UNIMARC

If you have a bunch you want to do you can write a normalization rule and do them all at once; with quick cataloged equipment you probably don't care if every position in the LDR and 008 is accurate.

Hi all,

Does anyone know if it's possible make a quick cataloging record be a resource type other than book or article? We have some equipment that was quick cataloged and it's messing with our analytics since the records appear to be books.

Thank you!

Katherine
