Thanks for that suggestion, Tria! We've been using Internal Note 1, but Provenance would save us some keystrokes :)

Hello Amy,

I don't have any big picture workflow advice, except to say that YES, reserve books take a lot of time!

As far as marking the books, on our campus I use the Provenance drop down menu in the item record, that menu is configurable to contain any category you would like so I also have donations and a few other outside budget lines there. I'm not sure exactly why I'm doing it this way, but it's proved useful, I like that the provenance codes are easily customized, I can see them on that first item record screen, and that they are easily searchable from the advanced search screen in alma so I can create sets to work on. When I withdraw reserve books completely I use a statistical note that says something like "retired reserve copy" (and I'm assuming I could search the deleted repository for the provenance if I needed to, but I haven't tried had occasion to do that). When the books are moved to the main collection obviously this provenance info would just stay with the item record even though the holding was changing, which might prove helpful if you say had to run a report about continuing circulation of endowment books or something.

Just my two cents,

Tria

If your library has a comprehensive textbook library that includes all required textbooks each quarter, do you have any advice for the workflow in Alma for these materials? I'm not sure it would be any different than any other course reserve item we currently process other than the significant increase in staff time to catalog, physically process, add to the appropriate course reserves lists, etc!

I suppose technically they'd be "donations" (from an endowment) and I don't believe we currently do anything in acquisitions for donations as discussed at our Alma meeting today. Would we need to add a note in the item record for good measure for some future purpose (analytics for example), or is the course reserve process designation enough? I assume that at some point old editions would go into the main collection and only current editions would stay in the textbook library.

Sorry if this sounds muddled! It is definitely a bit muddled in my head!
