Excellent idea.

You could even change the description to "8mm, 16mm and 35mm film reels", just for good measure :)

Thanks Wade.

The issue is that one of the libraries has films in 8mm, 16mm (and 35mm?) formats. There's a code in the table specifically for 16mm films and a more general code for film reels. We were trying to figure out if we could/should have distinct material types for each film format.

I'll deactivate the "16mm film" code (after I make sure we're not using it on any item records) and we'll use the broader "Film Reel" material type.

It will be ok!

Kirsti,

Those item material types are fixed by Ex Libris:

https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Materials/050Alma_FAQs/Print_Resource_Management/Item_Records#What_options_are_available_for_defining_the_material_type_of_the_item.3F

As a work-around, you could change the description on one of the item material type codes that you don't use, to repurpose that material type.

It's the description that appears on the pull-down in the item editing screen, so it would work.

I would just emphasize, select a material type code that wouldn't likely get used at your institution.

I'm trying to remember how customizable physical item material types are. I know that we can activate/deactivate lines in the Physical Material Type Description table and edit the description. I also know we can't add new lines to the table ourselves. Will Ex Libris add new lines if we request them via SalesForce?

It will be ok!
