[Wactclc-alma] Emeritus Faculty and Staff

Hmmm, interesting thoughts. A while ago, we decided internally not to pursue social login, mainly because of the equity and tutoring reasons you mentioned in your earlier message. For most users, it certainly poses more complications than the standard login (for cases where that’s available), but we might take another look at the possibilities.

Thank you!

Actually, an argument in favor of social login would be that students are already required, in many cases, to buy into textbooks and other materials that benefits private, for-profit entities.

As well, a lot of student tuition money gets passed straight through to for-profit vendors, for things like Alma / Primo, and many other third party systems.

So, a lot of the CTC ecology already benefits for-profits. And requiring participation in a for-profit service is probably not much of a stretch.

And at least, in the case of Facebook and Google for authentication, no money need pass hand.

Yes, social login is a good thought for you, Nina.

I was going to mention it. (And I’m surprised that it didn’t come up in our call with Wei).

Social Login can be used with external users, so it would work with your external student records that can’t currently login.

One concern about using social login has been that it disadvantages users that can’t or don’t want to join Google or Facebook, for whatever reasons. And it makes participation in an external service mandatory for users that want to log into their library accounts.

From a pure “patron equity” perspective, requiring students to join a private / for-profit service to be able to log into their library account may or may not be a no-go. Maybe Greg “the library equity expert” Bem has some thoughts on that one ☺

It would also be an additional information literacy topic to deal with for your library staff. As I could imagine some amount of hand-holding and tutoring would be necessary for at least some students.

But technically, it would be a way to at least partially deal with your current lack of any student authentication system.

Thanks, Gerie – I forgot about the social media login. We aren’t using it, so it slipped off my radar. That’s a good idea. (And yes, we need to research the specific agreement(s) first, thanks!)

Nina: There is a “social media login” option that you might be able to explore for these patrons.

On the other hand, it is my understanding that our licensing agreement for many of our databases prohibits access by anyone but our enrolled students….

This thread touches on something I’ve been wondering. When we opened our new building in 2008, our Foundation appealed to a handful of individuals (not students, staff or faculty) who funded a database or an electronic collection for us. The administration wanted them to have full access to the e-resources they donated, whether off-campus or on.

In Voyager, it was easy to give them access remotely, but in Alma, not so much. (And honestly, I’d be surprised if they actually used that access much.)

Similarly, we would like to give access to a very small number of people like the Board of Trustees, none of whom are current students, faculty or staff. Does anyone know of a good way to achieve remote database access through Alma for people in cases like this? Since the numbers are tiny, it doesn’t seem we would run afoul of the licensing agreements, at least not in intent, or in any practical way. But you’ll never see me hang out my shingle to practice law ☺.

Thanks for your thoughts!
Nina

My only suggestions would be to consider the fulfillment rules and patron limits, and whether you’d want to adjust downward things like maximum # of simultaneous checkouts, and shortened circulation period length.

Also, it’s worth making sure they understand that they no longer have access to electronic resources remotely. From a practical standpoint, they will no longer be active in your campus authentication system, so they wouldn’t be able to authenticate through EZProxy. From a legal standpoint, most licensing only covers active students and employees, not past employees.

Hi all,

Earlier this year, Edmonds started to award retiring faculty and staff the status of Emeritus. (Dale was awarded emeritus status this week.) So, we have created a new user group "Emeritus Faculty and Staff" and associated the group to proper fulfillment units/rules. This user group has the same rights and privileges as normal faculty and staff. Since these patron records will no longer be included in our PPMS loads, we have toggled these users to internal accounts and set an expiration date to far into the future.

I think we have the basic infrastructure set up for the user group, but perhaps we have missed something? Does anybody else deal with emeritus faculty and staff? Any best practice suggestions for maintaining these patron records? All constructive comments are welcomed.

Thanks in advance,

George
