>From what Leslie describes, I think Alma is working as designed.  The patron expiration date is pretty much the only thing that can limit patron use within a specific time frame.  As long as a student has an expiration date in the past, they won't be able to renew or check out materials.  The minute the expiration date changes, however, you've essentially told Alma-this person is now a valid user and all the normal rules apply.

If you want to prevent students from renewing overdue materials during breaks, your only options are to (a) not update their expiration dates until the start of the next quarter, or (b) manually change all of your loan rules to not allow renewals, then manually change all of your loan rules back at the start of the quarter to allow renewals again.

We've had to walk back a bunch of our previous policies of making things be due back at the ends of the quarter or restricting loans during breaks because it was simply too complicated and required too much manual intervention to manage in Alma, especially given all of our different libraries and patron groups.

Good question. I discussed this with our circ supervisors since I don't want to misrepresent them. Their concern with the example I emailed about was that it was after the quarter.

We don't have a written policy saying that students cannot renew items once they are overdue. However, we have an established procedure of all items being due at the end of a quarter, and we do not want students to be able to renew items over the break. Or, at least, we don't expect that.

Do you not allow students to renew items once they are overdue?  If not, could you share your policy about it?
