[Wactclc-alma] Internal versus External Student Patron

?George is correct.

The external loads from PPMS / SMS to Alma can NOT overlay existing Alma internal user records.

As George suggests, the easiest option is to simply toggle the account type in Alma from internal to external.

Or, just leave the internal record be. But as long as the internal record exists, the data from SMS / PPMS for that user won't be able to load, and you might miss user data updates.

Hi Tammy,

I think that internal patron accounts are not updated by the SMS loads. So, yes, I think you will have toggle them back to external in order for their records to be updated by the nightly loads.

To avoid toggling back and forth, you might just extend the expiration dates and change their user group from student to community user. That way, when they do come back into the system, their expiration dates and user group will be automatically updated. I am thinking off the top of my head and haven't tested this solution, but it might work...

If you have an internal patron who is then loaded as an external patron with the same primary ID, is the internal patron record overwritten?

For example, a student enrolls fall quarter, but not winter. During winter she wants to check out books, so we change her to an internal patron with community borrowing privileges (community user group) with the same primary ID. If she then enrolls for spring quarter, does her new external SMS record overwrite the internal patron record? Or do we have to manually change her to external and change her user group back to student?
