[Wactclc-alma] Quick cataloging vs. MDeditor

Hi Stephanie,

I catalog hundreds of pieces of equipment of all types except that most of it is purchased by the library used to circulate to students. Some of it belongs to other departments and I catalog it for them to circulate to their users. We do not use acquisitions.

I use a program called Marc Magician by Mitinet Library Services and import skimpy records into Alma: http://www.mitinet.com/products/MARCMagician.aspx. It costs about $300.00 per year. I don't follow strict, standard cataloging rules, but rather put enough information in the record so that it can be checked out and if it is lost, it can be identified for repurchase.

I see that they also have a free version to download. I will look into this as I do not use most of the features that are available in my paid version.

There probably is something in Alma to do the same thing, but I have not had time to investigate.

Maybe there is something in my method that would fit your situation or maybe we will learn a new trick at the upcoming Alma workshop.

Subject: [Wactclc-alma] Quick cataloging vs. MDeditor

Hi,

We have equipment from the IT department that gets cataloged in the library system to help track inventory and monitor who has stuff checked out/what's available, etc.

Does any other library catalog equipment for IT or keep materials in the library catalog that is not actually acquired by the library (like the campus prints or IT equipment, etc.) so it doesn't have to go through acquisitions but that still needs to be cataloged?

If so, how do you catalog it? I looked up on basecamp and found something about creating templates in MDeditor, but was wondering about the ability to use "Add Physical Item" under Resources/Create Inventory. This option seems limiting though since when you go to create the item, the only option it gives you is book or article. So if you're creating a record for a camera, then you'd have to go in and edit the leader on the item after creation.

I'm just curious if anyone else catalogs items that the library doesn't purchase but still maintains and inventory for and if you go through MDeditor using templates or if you do a "quick catalog" with the "Add Physical Item" option in resources/inventory.

Thanks,
Stephanie
