All,
So much has changed since we last connected face to face in January for our official Guided Pathways "launch" meeting. Looking back, that crazy weather that covered parts of our state in blankets of snow was unbeknownst to us our first glimpse into the ensuing year's disruption to higher education across the country, and more importantly, the communities we serve. You may recall that winter storm required us to adapt to a hybrid model, and we hosted our first ever live streamed learning event. Who would've guessed what would come next? At that time, more than a hundred thousand Americans had not yet died of the coronavirus, we were not trying to educate our children while working from home, there were 18 million more jobs, and the fury in response to our country's systemic racism was not yet as visible to many across the nation.
So. Much. Change.
AND
So. Much. Hope.
I am filled with hope regarding what this systemic disorientation could mean for future generations in our communities as we face this season together. Thank you for retaining focus on our movement to radically, and unequivocally evolve our system to one that " equitably prepares all learners to engage in a diverse society and workforce, achieve economic mobility through educational attainment and contribute to a socially just society"- we need each other now more than ever!
Over the last several months, our staff have been working to recalibrate the ways we support these efforts across our system, and here's what you can expect in 2020-2021 for ALL colleges:

COLLEGE REPORTING & WORK PLAN PRIORITIES

· 2019-2020 Report Reminder: Please work with your Vice President of Instruction to complete the HB2158 report (DUE 8/31/20) which includes responses related to your 2019-2020 Guided Pathways investments.

· 2020-2021 Priorities: In recognition of the evolving financial landscape impacted by COVID and concerns about HB2158 funding, we will be asking colleges in the coming weeks to review your current work plan and identify 3 top priorities for the year. Those identified priorities will be the focus of your 2020-2021 report next year.

COACHING
We are thrilled to announce the launch of a coaching cadre who will be providing coaching services to every college in the system by a pair of coaches. We kicked off the Coach training last month, and are excited about the diverse group of coaches from across Washington, Oregon, and Colorado who will be working alongside us. Stay tuned for more to come about that in the next few weeks!

STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
We are excited to be launching a Student Advisory Committee this fall- additional information and opportunities to refer students will be coming in September.

WEBSITE
In addition to the learning agenda, we are happy to report we will be releasing a new & improved website on September 1, 2020. The website will include resources including tools for assessing essential practices, research and resources related to implementation of an equity-centered Guided Pathways framework.

LEARNING AGENDA
The learning agenda and specifically, the historically face to face Guided Pathways Cohort retreats and Student Success Institutes have been cancelled through the 2020-2021 academic year. In lieu of the cohort retreats and student success institutes, we are planning a cluster of virtual series focused on priority areas this year. We also will be offering structured virtual college team times designed to support your college's priorities as we learn (alongside all of you) about virtual engagement (this is going to be AWESOME, and include inspiring tunes, video clips, STUDENTs, and new ways to connect!).

The most up to date information including registration (for those requiring it) can be found on the Student Success Center website HERE<https://www.sbctc.edu/colleges-staff/programs-services/student-success-center/guided-pathways.aspx>. "Americans have long been trained to see the deficiencies of people rather than policy. It's a pretty easy mistake to make: People are in our faces. Policies are distant. We are particularly poor at seeing the policies lurking behind the struggles of people."
