SBCTC colleagues

I am very pleased to announce that we have created a new position in our agency, Director for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. As you know, last year, our Board adopted a new vision statement for the college system:

“Leading with racial equity, out colleges maximize student potential and transform lives

within a culture of belonging that advances racial, social, and economic justice

in service to our diverse communities.”

And earlier this year, the Board approved a ten year Strategic Plan that highlights achieving educational equity as one of our key goals. https://www.sbctc.edu/about/agency/initiatives-projects/strategic-plan/default.aspx

I have asked Ha Nguyen to serve as SBCTC’s first Director for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and our policy lead for equity producing strategies in the college system, reporting to me effective October 1. Ha has 17 years experience in the community and technical college system, and has been a member of our staff for the past four years. She has been instrumental in organizing the first equity committee for our agency. We have benefited from the professional development organized by this ream at our staff retreats and Lunch & Learn series, staff climate surveys, and the committee’s review and recommendations on our hiring practices.

Ha has been active in college system equity and diversity efforts including Faculty and Staff of Color Conference, Faculty of Color Mentoring Program, Students of Color conference, and Guided Pathways as a coach and change facilitator, as well as state and national organizations focused on equity. More recently she assumed responsibility staffing the presidents’ new standing committee on Equity.

Please join me in welcoming Ha to this important new role for SBCTC.

Jan
