Friends and Colleagues:

Today, for this professional developer, was way amazing. Like, so unbelievably awesome.

17 of the 34 CTCs in our Washington State CTC system logged on to Zoom simultanously to participate in a live workshop with Dr. Mary-Ann Winkelmes, chief mind and heart behind the Transparency in Learning and Teaching Project (TILT Higher Ed).

This epic online pro D experience was the official kick of Phase 2<http://bit.ly/2JFvwyO> of 2,1,1 TILT: The Equitable Assignment Challenge<http://bit.ly/2NJLNZW>, a professional learning experience for faculty to explore the absolutely vital role they play in accomplishing 3 of Jan Yoshiwara's system goals: completions, equity, and enrollments.

At my count, approximately 145 faculty members from all 3 mission areas partnered with a "disciplinary stranger" to give and receive feedback on one assignment to make the purpose, tasks, and criteria for success more transparent for students to increase the quality (and therefore equity) of student learning.

Here's what a few participants wrote to me about the experience of learning how to TILT Assignments:
1. I used to think... it wasn't important to put due dates and grading criteria on the assignment because that information could be found in Canvas, that stating the assignment purpose wasn't always necessary, And now I Know... assignment criteria including due dates, grading criteria and assignment purpose needs to be clearly stated on every assignment, Which makes me feel... like I can "TILT" my assignments to make them more user friendly for my students, make assignment expectations more clear and "transparent," So no I can/will... use the checklist to modify/improve assignments!

2. I used to think that to arrange the assignment to be more transparent requires a lot of work, and now I know that it is not that hard because I can ask my students for help which makes me feel excited to convert more announcement into TILT format. So now, I will do it!
3. I used to think... writing assignments was the "easy" part, and grading was hard. Now I know...(or I am guessing) that if the assignment is written well, grading will be less of a chore. Which makes me feel...excited? Relieved? Eager to try this [TILT-ing}! So now I can/will...be more purposeful in how I write assignments.
In addition to a HUGE thank you to Mary-Ann for the courage and grace to facilitate a learning experience like this . . . this took so much work in terms of organization and logistics, not just from the participating faculty, but also from our wonderful, beautiful, and hardworking PROJECT LEADS (see the list here<http://bit.ly/2QEfThR>).
A huge thank you to all of you who participated from me, the happiest and luckiest professional developer in the world. Yes, the world.
Peace,
Jen
PS-- I will be hosting another a "make-up" charrette from 10 AM to 12:30 PM tomorrow via WebEx . . . please contact me if you would like to join!

"I'm not interested in the exceptions, only the patterns. As a culture, we (the U.S.) focus too much on exceptions, often fooling ourselves into believing that because there are exceptions, the rule no longer exists or that it's easily broken by anyone with enough willpower or hutzpah."
