Very helpful!

So, the high level I have is what we operate under with no other requirements. I wasn't confident in the information I received, so though I would follow up with the village.

Thanks to all that have reached out and extended support.

Much appreciated,

Melanie Dixon

Good afternoon, Melanie and DEOC--

I share your concern and I am sure folks across the system are experiencing varying degrees of 😱🤯 as finance departments are beginning to close things out for the year.

What is outlined in the senate bills is vague-ish and is an opportunity to get creative with DEI monies. Some of what that could look like:

  * professional development (think conferences and training registrations you can pay for in advance for your team or teams in your college)
  * speakers, a speaker series, or workshops
  * putting someone on contract for DEI work
  *   programming
  *   books and resources

Because it has to be spent by June 30, a lot of this will likely be purchasing things in advance, and I know it's not much time...

I know your colleagues have some creative solutions as well.

Ha and the EDI team at the time put these webinars together and they may also provide some ideas: https://www.sbctc.edu/about/edi/sb-5194-and-5227

If there are others who would like to get on a call with Cherie Berthon who is our operations budget director, I could arrange a zoom call. She has always been a helpful conversation partner to
me.

Lastly, because we know better, we do better. As we look to new monies that will be distributed and the continuance of promised money, I will work with our folks here at the agency to put some guidances in place that we can add to the landing page I referenced above.

I hope this is helpful and always happy to jump on a call!

Peace,
Sophia

Good morning, Sophia,

I am hoping you can assist me with the 5194 and 5227 funding constraints. I have just been given access to these funding streams and see I have 300k to spend prior to June 30th. I am sure you can imagine how frustrated I am by this discovery and the lack of urgency by my college to leverage these dollars to address opportunity gaps. Do you have a document or website I can reference that outline what's allowable for each funding stream. I have the high-level understanding (i.e. Prof D), but not the specifics and unfortunately we have no expertise in our budget office.

Thank you in advance for the support and have a great day.
