To add to Vanessa's comments: I know our Native and Indigenous folks also would share that in lieu of burning sage or sweetgrass in their offices, sometimes they will use a spray, which, even if it is an essential oil or something derived from those plants, some would still categorize as fragrance/sent.

+1 on what Consuelo and Vanessa shared.

At our college they are approached as accommodation.

For example, in our business office there is a sign in front of an office if that person is sensitive or allergic to fragrances, it will let you know before going into that office.

I personally don’t appreciate fragrance free policies as they become punitive to black and brown folx (i.e. our fragrant hair products). I think most folx on our campus who need a fragrance free environment, go through an accommodation process that may come with signage around their work area stating that it’s a fragrance free area…
