Hi team,

We're working on some machines Brandon sent us back. The driver installation in the machines is a little hit-and-miss. Currently, two devices show up as needing new drivers, one of which is the important graphics driver. Is everyone using one master image? We don't have USB access on the laptops to install the drivers here, but we would love to make sure the master image has everything it needs. The drivers are in the bottom right here: https://justicetechsolutions.com/collections/frontpage/products/securebook-6

Thanks,

Thanks John here is what I found out:

Invalid BIOS Password Issue:
Thanks for your help, Jeremy.

I tried an external keyboard on the bricked laptop and was able to get into the BIOS. I also did some additional testing and was able to get into the BIOS without the external keyboard by toggling numlock on and off before entering the password.

I also found out that it’s not related to the fast boot setting. I was also able to reproduce the issue by going into the BIOS and then turning numlock on with the numlock key. Then saved and exited the BIOS. After the computer restarts and you enter the BIOS password again you will have the “invalid password” issue. Toggling numlock on and off then fixes the issue. The reason booting into windows also fixed this issue was because when windows starts up it automatically turned numlock off.

There must be a bug in the BIOS. It’s almost like the numlock is enabled and disabled at the same time. I think visually the numlock is disabled because when you’re typing the password the blue numlock keys respond as normal keys like they should, but on the back side I think the BIOS thinks numlock is enabled. As soon as you cycle numlock on and off they become in sync again and then you can enter the password like normal.

Since we figured out the issue, I’ll keep the laptop. Unless he still needs it back for testing. But he should be able to reproduce the issue with the information I’ve provided.

Trackpad Lockout Feature:

Also, about the trackpad lockout feature. If possible, maybe make 3 options for the feature in the BIOS; “auto”, “disabled”, and “toggle”/”manual”.

“auto” would function as it does currently, automatically disabling the trackpad while typing. Maybe even make this feature exclude keys like “ctrl”, “shift”, “win”, and “alt”.

“disabled” would disable the feature.

“toggle”/”manual”, the third option would change the secondary display button that is on the F4 key into a hotkey for disabling and enabling the trackpad. This button is currently useless for us because we don’t have any way of connecting a secondary display. And if we did you could just use the “display settings” desktop right click menu option. Plus, the key kind of looks like a track pad anyway and when the feature is set to “auto” or “disabled” it would still function as it does currently.

Just an idea!

Jeremy’s response to the BIOs issue.

He would like to get the bricked laptop if possible and is wondering if you tried using an external keyboard.

Thanks, John. That's the first report I've heard like this, but I'm not sure about anyone else using "fast boot" - I will attempt to replicate it here. Next time it happens, can Brandon confirm if entering the password via an external keyboard also does not work?

I'm wondering if it has something like Num Lk or other setting that's being carried over from Windows to the Keyboard, the fact that restarting Windows seems to fix the issue is curious to me. Can we get the "bricked" laptop sent back to us?

In the next iteration of the BIOS there is now a button to turn off the feature which disabled the trackpad while typing.

Best,
jeremy

Good morning, Jeremy,

Brandon from SCCC has reached out with another issue that he has been experiencing with the GEN 3 BIOs.

From Brandon: “Another issue I’m having is sometimes the Securebook 6 laptop’s BIOS password doesn’t work, it says “invalid password” even though I’m entering the correct password and have never changed the password. The only way I’ve been able to fix this is by booting into windows and then clicking the restart button in windows. Then after the computer restarts the BIOS password works perfectly fine. I have a computer that is bricked because of this. The computer is failing to boot into windows, and I can’t install a new copy of windows on it because it’s saying the BIOS password is invalid when trying to enter the boot menu.

My only guess as to why this is happening is due to enabling fast boot. But I don’t know for sure if this was the cause because I don’t know how to reliably reproduce the problem.”

Note, the first issue was regarding the keyboard\trackpad update in 3.03. It is my understanding that you are working on a solution to this issue and will provide a future update with a fix, so I didn’t include it here.

Let me know if you have any questions and I can pass them along to Brandon.
