[BLC] question about BAS admissions requirement

Hi Chris,

The closest thing to an SBCTC policy would be the ICRC handbook <https://www.wa-council.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2020-Final-Revised-ICRC-Handbook-12.20.pdf> and it's guidance on transfer credit. In transfer, an overall 2.0 GPA is required but individual courses are accepted in transfer with a grade of "D" (1.0) or higher. BAS programs are not bound by this requirement, but I would encourage colleges to review requirements that are more stringent - it could make sense if the content in the course is foundational to the upper division content but it is worth examining to ensure the policy is supporting an true academic preparedness need.

Subject: [BLC] question about BAS admissions requirement

[Sent from outside SBCTC]

Hello BLC colleagues,

I have a question regarding admissions requirement. What is your GPA requirement for your BAS degree programs? Do you require a certain GPA for individual courses that are different from the graduation requirement for your AA degrees?

So, here is a scenario. We require 2.0 GPA in each and every GenEd course for a student to be admitted into the BAS degree programs. However, that is not a graduation requirement for every AAT degree. So we had student who obtained their AAT degree with a C- in Sociology. Her overall GPA was high enough to be accepted into the BAS degree that she applied for, but she was told that she had to repeat the Sociology class because she did not obtain a 2.0 in that specific course. Of course, financial aid wouldn't pay for the class. We are currently debating about this policy.

I am curious if something like this ever came up at your college, and if so how you have handled it. I am also wondering if there are any SBCTC policies about this. I can't seem to find any.

Thank you for your input!
