[Wsssc] Reports: Student Basic Needs Survey & State Student Loan

WSSSC Colleagues,


Sharing two reports that went live today. The first report focuses on student basic needs as related to food and housing insecurity. The second report reviews the national landscape of state student loan programs. A quick summary of each report is highlighted below.  Please feel free to share as appropriate.

Statewide Postsecondary Basic Needs Survey
In fall 2022, over 9,700 students from 39 colleges and universities across Washington State participated in the first-ever statewide postsecondary basic needs survey. Key findings show stark challenges for many Washington students:

  *   Nearly 4 in 10 students surveyed (38.3%) reported experiencing food insecurity in the last 30 days.
  *   Over a third (34.2%) reported experiencing housing insecurity in the last 12 months, with more than 1 in 10 (11.3%) having experienced homelessness.

State Student Loan Report

The report provides:

A brief summary of the recent legislation.

  *   A description of WSAC's process to convene stakeholders for purposes of carrying out the statutory directive.
  *   A summary of discussions including the national context of the state student loans.
  *   Recommendations and considerations to the Legislature.
  *   The full report is attached.
