WSSSC: FYI below regarding the new 988 mental health hotline. Christine McMullin here researched it after we got a question from Jess. Thanks Jess for bringing it to our attention!

I know you were already included on my original post to ACC but I wanted to send you the article linked above. It points once again to the crisis we are facing in the lack of mental health providers and the stresses on the overall system. Many of the supportive services and resources that will be linked to the 988 call centers are not yet fully developed (the idea of a call center "hub" system).

Hello!

I'm sure many of you are already aware of the upcoming "988" crisis line that is slated to go live on July 16, but I thought I would share a few links below in case you wanted more information. I understand WCTCCA has already had some discussion on their listserv about this service and the possible development of college communication plans related to it.

988 is an additional resource to support individuals in crisis. 988 calls will go directly to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline centers (and the standard 10-digit phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will still work).

The great news about all of this? Existing crisis resources will not go away. There will continue to be no changes for dispatching crisis responders and mobile crisis response teams from existing services. Print and digital materials you may already have in place will not become outdated. The addition of 988 gives you one more resource to put in the hands of your students to provide support for mental health crisis moments.

Added benefits of 988 -

  * Short, easy to remember number to gain access to assistance/support
  * Services available in Spanish and interpretation services for 250 additional languages
  * Call, text, and chat support.
  * Washington will also launch the Native and Strong Lifeline (serving American Indian and Alaskan Native individuals) to provide additional resources and follow up.

The above factoids come from the DOH <https://doh.wa.gov/chk/node/14398> and HCA <https://www.hca.wa.gov/about-hca/programs-and-initiatives/behavioral-health-recovery/988-crisis-line-implementation-hb-1477#what-does-change-july-16-2022> pages on 988 implementation.

I hope you are all having a great summer.

Christine
