Colleagues,

Here is information highlighting Clark's accessibility compliance concerns related to Maxient. I have shared this information with our AG and will be speaking with her today. I think we want to be aware of these current limitations as we discuss a purchase due to our commitment to assess each new technology tool for compliance. This compliance testing was overseen by our director of disability support services and ADA compliance officer.

Accessibility Overview:

**Overall: no headings or aria regions anywhere in the public-facing forms or backend interface.  Backend interface uses clunky frames that are not labeled well.

**For the public-facing I.R. form: issues selecting date and time incidents occurred with keyboard, seeming inability to include alt-text for institutional logo, inability to select incident location from dropdown, parts of I.R. form trap keyboard focus, slightly inaccessible / hard-to-read table data in report pdf generated by system and emailed to submitter.

*Issues on the backend: unlabeled form controls in various search fields, inability to include headings or image alt-text in letters and email messages generated by the system, focus-jumping issue on "sent letter" screen similar to that on public-facing forms, various minor keyboard issues in the rich content editor, inability to spellcheck accessibly from within the system, inaccessible interface for selecting charges / issues in the "Create Case" screen.

Compliance-wise:

We estimate that an independent auditor would give it a single-A rating WCAG compliance-wise  (WCAG 2.0 A). The good news is, this means they have some level of accessibility but not the level we at Clark are calling for in our soon to be Accessible Technology Policy effective soon, before June 30th.



ADA Coordinator's Perspective:

If you're asking me from an ADA Compliance perspective, Maxient should be purchased later after it has reached WCAG 2.0 AA rating from our accessibility perspective and to align with our Accessibility Policy proposal. The good news, Maxient claims via it's VPAT (Voluntary Product Accessibility Template) that they are remedying things to be WCAG 2.0 AA by December 2017. However, many vendors make claims so the best decision compliance-wise would be to assess Maxient again in January if they confirm they have reached WCAG 2.0 AA. I am also unsure if the version someone buys today is the version that will be the latest come December 2017 when Maxient has remedied the accessibility hiccups and become WCAG 2.0 AA?



Additional Considerations/Thoughts:

*This is the type of form that would be used by students in urgent and/or sensitive situations so we don't want them to experience and accessibility barrier during these situations.

Clark is interested in moving forward, but we want a commitment from Maxient to deliver on their commitment to reaching a WCAG 2.0 AA rating. Let me know if you have any questions,

I saw Rosie's email and had to chime in. Though Big Bend doesn't have Maxient, I am well versed in the package thanks to my former institution. When that college contracted with Maxient, our disability services director asked about accessibility. It was clear based on Maxient's response they were unfamiliar with the term. This is definitely something we need to pay attention to, as we need to engage in partnerships that will help us serve all our population. I would love to hear that Maxient has worked on this concern. If they haven't, I am very interested to hear what my colleagues across Washington have done to make the tool accessible.
