[Wsssc] Question about student success courses

Good afternoon. Our College Success (COLLG 110) is required of all Pierce students (with a few small exceptions (listed below)) in their first or second quarter (most take it in their first). We rolled it out over three years (Year 1 required for students who placed into two developmental ed courses, Year 2 required for all students who placed into one dev ed course, Year 3 required for all).

During the three year roll out, all curricula were adjusted to include the course as a part of the degree, with the exception of certificate programs of fewer than 25 credits.

The course was developed with a team of faculty and faculty interested in teaching it must attend a training (roughly seven hours; led by the lead faculty member) and are held to a common curriculum. There is some flexibility within that curriculum, but not substantial as the concept is that students will have a common experience and build on the outcomes of the course in subsequent courses within their program.
During the roll-out and in building the policy, we relied heavily on the use of national and local data to support the impact that the course was having on student success. The course continues to develop through joint faculty discourse around design and pedagogy.

It is generally offered as a 3 credit course, though we have piloted some 5 credit sections (lots of reasons for this; considering making this the standard) and have developed grounded, hybrid, and fully online versions.

Here are the exceptions:
• Students who transfer in 30 or more credits with a cumulative GPA of a 2.0 or higher will not be required to take COLLG 110.
• Students enrolled in a certificate program that is fewer than 25 credits will not be required to take COLLG 110.
• Students who have a degree from a regionally accredited institution will not be required to take COLLG 110.
• Students who are matriculating at another institution and are attending Pierce for a quarter will not be required to take COLLG 110.
• Students who have successfully completed (2.0, C, P, or higher) an equivalent course at another institution can transfer the course and will not be required to take Pierce’s COLLG 110. An unofficial transcript will suffice for the waiver of the requirement. Official transcripts will be required to formally transfer the credit.
• Students enrolled in a statewide Competency Based Education (CBE) program will not be required to take COLLG 110.
• Students who believe they should be exempted from COLLG 110 and do not meet any of the above exceptions can request an exemption through a Director of Advising and Entry Services. [Note: we get several of these, though few of them are approved]

Please let us know if you have questions or need clarification!

Best,
Matt

Subject: [Wsssc] Question about student success courses

Do any of you have student success or guidance courses that you require some students to take? We have a college success course that we would like to require of undecided/undeclared new students and new transfer students, but we are a little uncertain about whether doing so would run counter to the agreement behind the AA-DTA, so if any of your colleges have done this successfully, I’m all ears about how you did it.
