Hi there,

A faculty at Shoreline CC shared this with our campus and I thought I would pay it forward. As places that serve people of all multicultural backgrounds, I think it is important to be aware of the religious traditions that our clients, students, and colleagues may be celebrating. FYI- This might be heavily student language based, but probably applicable beyond the classroom.

A few big takeaways:

  * Ramadan is projected to start on May 6th (this coming Monday)
  * "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Ramadan Kareem" are common greetings
  * The Dhuhr (high noon) prayer begins a little after 1pm each day --> Avoid meetings between 1:00-1:30pm, or explicitly allow a 15-min break to all in attendance at that time.
  * Fasting each day is between dawn to sunset and includes water --> Reminder to avoid inconsiderate comments about your perceived feelings/emotions related to their fasting or not fasting choices
  * Reminder that every person celebrating Ramadan may do so differently; don't inflict/assume your perceptions of the holiday or what your other friends celebrating Ramadan might do

Here are some additional resources (albeit a little student centric, but still good information):
