Subject: [EXTERNAL*]-[Wactclc-alma] NOTES for 5/17 Zoom meeting

Hi all,
Since we can't post notes without Wade, I don't think, I'll just throw them in this email 🙂

Thanks to Elena at Skagit for hosting the meeting today! She has the recording and the chat transcript. Kirsti volunteered to host Thursday's meeting, so keep an eye out for the link.

Meeting notes 5/17/22

ELUNA thoughts
Early in 2023, ExL is going to migrate a bunch of Analytics right into Alma. If you migrate to the new platform, you'll be able to do a lot with the data externally, like create a persistent link to reports that you can share outside of Alma (like with your admin folks). Probably you will still be able to go back and forth between Alma analytics and Oracle analytics.

  1. Question: Will there still be a 24 hour delay on numbers? Not sure...
  2. Question: Will they also upgrade to a newer version of Oracle? Maybe? or Maybe do an upgrade to the display option?
  3. Noted: DEI stuff happening, like problematic subject headings -- how to change/ display questions being actively discussed in a few working groups.

Digital Repository -- Caitlan Maxwell
New listserv collaboration with Ro McKernan. There is lots to think about tech, partnerships, communication with repositories, so Caitlan and Ro wanted to start a community of practice. They created a listserv focused on digital projects & repositories: https://lists.ctc.edu/mailman/listinfo/digital-repositories_lists.ctc.edu.

  1. Current scene: Shoreline wants to start a repository for student, faculty, and staff and will be purchasing software soon. Digital Repositories could be for undergraduate research -- Skagit is getting a grant focused on undergraduate research -- but it could also work for archives, student newspapers.... Shoreline is probably going with DSpace Express, which is a hosted instance through Atmire: https://www.atmire.com/dspace-express, while WCC uses Omeka-S using Reclaim Hosting (https://reclaimhosting.com/): http://whatcomdigitalcommons.org/s/home/page/about.
  2. Consideration: space. With the DSpace Express option there may be limits, and Reclaim hosting will do like 100G for $100 a year (or something similar).
  3. Consideration: platform and purpose. DSpace and Omeka-S over ContentDM or Preservica? DSPace is more institutional repository as well as digital archive...
  4. Consideration: workload and institutional support. Some folks are trying to stay out of the IR game for now, put that on the institution rather than the library until/unless they staff us better. Concerns about workload, expectations on what the library can provide (especially leaders from 4-year universities not understanding the CC environment)... Alma/ Primo was a huge lift already for some folks, these types of efforts could reproduce that (and related traumas).
  5. Consideration: Primo. Wade helped us add our Omeka content so that it is discoverable in Primo. When Ex Libris was developing Primo, they specifically built it to accept metadata content from multiple outside sources. https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Documentation/010Alma_Online_Help_(English)/Digital_Resource_Management/020Configuring_Digital_Resource_Management/010Managing_Remote_Digital_Repositories
  6. Consideration: cooperative purchasing of platforms? Lots of institutions are seeing these efforts (undergrad research, student-created OER, institutional repository stuff) surface (examples following). Amy Herman will talk about this with the WACTC governance council at an upcoming meeting (she's the secretary)

BAS programs

  1. Consideration: budgeting for library resources as part of the planning process. One BAS starting up at SPSCC for craft brewing -- the library and Lily is involved. What kind of budget was asked for? Pierce CC asked for .25FTE, for example. Kristi: I'd also recommend talking to Aryana Bates and Lynn Kanne at North Seattle and Seattle Central. Amy: We require a "library" line for new BAS program budgets. That said, not all programs were willing to allocate that to us after the first year. It was a big issue. Kirsti: Any student at Seattle College has to pay a BAS fee for special programs which is specifically earmarked for library people/ resources.
  2. Cool thing: SPSCC has a tasting room for their program! No full-time faculty yet for the program, though -- priorities 🙂. Heritage program at SPSCC: https://spscc.edu/news/destination-drinks-side-education-tumwaters-new-craft-district. Cardinal program at Skagit: https://svccardinalcraftbrewing.ecwid.com/.

Negotiating database pricing
Library Leadership Council - one of the items that came up was negotiated database pricing. Partnering with the eLearning people at SBCTC to leverage their voices in negotiating prices. What's the overlap between the LLC/ SBCTC versus WACTCLC (our consortium, like 28 of the 34 colleges represented by LLC, whose only real project was the Alma/ Primo migration). At the moment, trying to get Wade's position filled is the WACTCLC priority, but cooperative purchases and other considerations are out there, too. Many folks buy resources via Orbis... but don't pay into the consortium. Other folks go directly but it takes some time to negotiating -- like buying CQ Researcher from LYRASIS. LYRASIS and Community College League (or something) in California might have some deals on pricing that could compete with Orbis. LYRASIS also has training.

Have a great week, everyone! Y'all are the best.
