Interesting! Thank you , Kirsti!

The "DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals" collection has three options, which do you recommend? "Activate" or "Activate for Search in CDI" or "Activate for Full Text in CDO only?"

Here's an explanation I sent to a colleague when Ex Libris announced the 2 different electronic collections:

Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ): Ex Libris had to create 2 different electronic collections to deal with changes the organization that runs DOAJ made to how it was releasing article vs. journal metadata.

The changes the organization made were a result of the organization having lots of problems getting publishers to provide correct data in a standardized format. They finally gave up and announced they wouldn't be able to provide any information about which specific journal issues were open access and which issues weren't.

The electronic collection called "DOAJ not for CDI Discovery" gives us title level access to journal titles-- stuff in here shows up in the Journal A-Z list and a Library Catalog Primo search. Ex Libris specifically designed this electronic collection to *not* have any CDI settings.

The electronic collection called "DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals" only exists so citation records in the CDI have an electronic collection in Alma they can be associated with. (I think CDI citation records need an Alma electronic collection to link to in order to show up in a Primo search? I think it's a relational database thing.) It has no records for journal titles. It *only* has CDI settings.

To the best of my knowledge, you should

  * Activate DOAJ not for CDI Discovery if you want DOAJ journals to show up at the *title* level in your Journals A to Z list and a Library Catalog search scope

  * Activate DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals if you want open access *articles* from DOAJ journals to show up in an Articles or an Everything scoped search.

Hope this helps.

It will be ok!

Hi Amy:

Thanks. This came up after I had an article I was looking for that should have been in DOAJ, and even though I also had that first one activated, it didn't show up in Primo. I submitted a case, and Wade responded to me, recommending that we activate both of them. He said that they work together somehow so that the article links will appear. Without the second one (which looks like a database-only activation to me) somehow, apparently, the article-level linking won't happen.

I'm still not quite understanding this, so if Wade or someone can explain how and why these two things work together for DOAJ, I'd sure appreciate it. For all of my other open access collections, I just activate the ones with the portfolios and they just automatically work. DOAJ seems to be different somehow. Wade said that the coverage for specific titles is no longer included in the CDI for whatever reason and so we're more likely to get broken links with DOAJ. Maybe that's why?

I don't know and it's making my head hurt. Koha's simplicity is looking really appealing to me right now...

I have the one with portfolios activated ("Not for CDI discovery").

Hi all:

For those of you who have DOAJ activated, which of these do you have?

[cid:image001.png at 01D87F1A.9F458400]

Also, if you activated #2, did you Activate or Activate for Search in CDI, or do you have to do both?

I'm still super confused by the whole CDI activation thing, even though I've watched all kinds of webinars about it...

Thanks,

Elena
