[Wactclc-primo] [EXTERNAL] - Re: Ebsco weirdness from Primo

Through the wonder of Google I saw a blog post from 2012 about HBR wanting to lock down access to their top 500 articles when used by college faculty via third party services. I thought for sure 10 years later that wouldn’t still be relevant, but it gave me some new search terms to try Googling, which is how I then happened upon the CSU San Marcos note in their A-Z list. Then I found similar notices on quite a few libguides, concerning HBR, like this one: https://askus.library.wwu.edu/faq/116763

I still see the same behavior both logged in and not logged in to Primo (only the “Get It” resources are shown on the record, and no “View It” options are visible for the Ebsco OR Gale databases).

I feel like I still want students to see that an article exists when they search, even if the Primo linking is all jacked up.

Thanks, Wade!

I tried signing in and then performing the search for How Apple is Organized and got the same behavior. The View It step did pause for a bit and it looked like it was trying to connect, but then it just landed on the print holdings.

Amy and Lesley, you’re both hired 😊 Excellent analysis and investigation. Not sure how quickly I would have gotten there on this one. Kind of tricky.

Amy, what made you think to look at CSUSM specifically? Just curious.

Lesley, you’re correct about losing the article search results for HBR, if you disable those portfolios in collections where they appear.

Amy, I see you already added a public note to the portfolio, which was my first thought. But unfortunattely that note will only appear on a search result for the journal title record, but not for HBR article citations from the CDI.

You can add that same public note to the physical items for HBR, but that would be on a per issue basis, and not particularly visible in Primo VE.

In any case, just because CSUSM has that statement in their catalog, I’m not certain that’s the definitive answer.

If I look at the CDI analysis tool on Amy’s citation, the CDI does report that full text is avaialble for EBSCOhost Business Source complete, though not for the Gale collections, which does report that the citation is search only (see far right column).

Pierce only has the CDI result available via Ebsco, so that’s a bit simpler of a test.

Amy and Lesley, could you both try logging into Primo VE and then checking that citation to see if a full text citation appears?

Depending on the result, we can open a ticket with ExL.

I checked Alma-L and Primo-L, and did not find any conversations about HBR.

I wonder if we should remove the HBR portfolios from our Alma? We have one from ESBCO and one from Gale. Or is it worth the article showing up knowing students won’t be able to get to the article on first click?

I made a public note for that portfolio in our A-Z list, similar to CSU San Marcos. Not sure what else can be done.

Makes me wonder if other publishers have this kind of control over what does and doesn’t link in Primo, and how would we know? I’m super annoyed.

Welp, take a look at CSUSM description for HBR. They know something we don’t! Question answered, I guess.

Hi Amy,

I was able to replicate that weirdness with “How Apple is Organized” at Pierce too. It seems to be happening with all HBR articles. Here’s another:
https://sbctc-piercecollege.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01STATEWA_PIERCE/12mqddp/cdi_proquest_miscellaneous_2148947398<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fsbctc-piercecollege.primo.exlibrisgroup.com%2fpermalink%2f01STATEWA_PIERCE%2f12mqddp%2fcdi_proquest_miscellaneous_2148947398&c=E,1,jL0WYg-z8WIcdwemygQdgzCx9a9OpLcnyF6RRawmYxl7ZtmaTMWwxpEEhUyobFNSoveKdVqp98bqfcj6KDCE8rwUxE9aavXr-VO33Fp8je4HlvfDrIY8KQ,,&typo=1>

I wondered if it would happen with any article where we had it in both print and online, but I tested with a Popular Science article and it worked fine.
https://sbctc-piercecollege.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01STATEWA_PIERCE/12mqddp/cdi_proquest_miscellaneous_1623258542<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fsbctc-piercecollege.primo.exlibrisgroup.com%2fpermalink%2f01STATEWA_PIERCE%2f12mqddp%2fcdi_proquest_miscellaneous_1623258542&c=E,1,TnYHL98WhXrv8tn3H70dosAyGVa6w9RDzKDVE8jaL63UHCirexsMf3lXb1plc00Is--Fa13Nm6om18fWt_ob4yF8u30jHczkn6oY1f-482Ws6MhULgvo&typo=1>

Maybe we should open a ticket?

In searching Primo, this article comes up, and implies that it is available in a database (it is indeed available in Ebsco Business Source Complete). https://sbctc-olympic.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?query=any,contains,how%20apple%20is%20organized&tab=Everything&search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&vid=01STATEWA_OLYMPIC:OLYMPIC&mode=Basic<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fsbctc-olympic.primo.exlibrisgroup.com%2fdiscovery%2fsearch%3fquery%3dany%2ccontains%2chow%2520apple%2520is%2520organized%26tab%3dEverything%26search_scope%3dMyInst_and_CI%26vid%3d01STATEWA_OLYMPIC%3aOLYMPIC%26mode%3dBasic&c=E,1,W2nAjMDMhEMEs9PqbqGU91PL0bYjW9hyDqfsdrA8jsK5OApKaLZVpEDO3IFLcb9ZOcaxo6e0heF63PAGG8HQ6YJHSYooYR1ItfDPqNtD&typo=1>

But when you click on either the title or the “Available Online” link, or title, it only points you to our print holdings and not the database with no way to access online (screenshots 1 & 2):

However when I look up that journal in A-Z list, all options show properly. (screenshot #3).

Is this part of the other Ebsco weirdness? Or some other issues?
