I attended the afternoon session of the same webinar. It sounds like when you activate an EBSCO electronic collection in Alma, unless you suppress full text searching in CDI, the content from the EBSCO collection will be searchable in Primo because CDI knows which titles/portfolios are in the collection and is able to find citations/metadata from non-EBSCO providers based on that. With PCI, we have to tell PCI which non-EBSCO collections to include for searching to cover the titles/portfolios in the EBSCO collection, but CDI does it automatically.

Here is what I read:

In the CDI webinar this morning by Ex Libris I asked the question in chat about alternative coverage and this was the response... so I’m still confused.

Lesley,

Short answer is… leave your current alternative coverages for Ebsco in the PCI activated. Additional explanation below.

>From the CDI FAQs<https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Primo/Content_Corner/Central_Discovery_Index/Documentation/020Frequently_Asked_Questions/What_Will_Activations_for_CDI_Look_Like_in_Alma%3F#Alternative_Coverage_Collections>:

If you are using the FullyFlexible setting, you will need to continue to activate alternative collections for collections that are not directly indexed in CDI, in order to have their content searchable. The majority of content is not uniquely indexed in just one place, so the alternative coverage is high, but you might need to activate several collections to achieve the highest possible coverage. If you use the EasyActive setting, you do not need to worry about activations of alternative coverage collections, because the majority of collections are active for searching by default. Only collections for which you need a subscription to search them, are not active by default and are dependent on your Alma activations, for example many of the A&I databases.

Additional Info from me:

FullyFlexible mode in CDI means that only the CDI collections you activate are searched.

EasyActive mode in CDI means that most CDI collections are pre-activated and search by default.

In either case, CDI search results in Primo will work like PCI search results do now.

When in regular (“expand my search” *not* selected), only articles and content from titles you have activated in Alma will appear in search results. When “expand my search” is selected, citations for all activated PCI content will appear, even if you do not have access based on what you have activated in Alma.

My general recommendation for CDI will be to run CDI in FullyFlexible mode, at least initially. So that we retain granular control of CDI content being search.

And, with FullyFlexible mode, if you have alternative coverages for Ebsco content enabled, you should leave them enabled.

Thanks, Lesley.

I’ll look into this.

I think there may be some context missing from the Q & A below. And lack of accuracy in that ExL response. Their answer doesn’t make sense to me.

Hi everyone,

I am reviewing our PCI activations in preparation for the move to CDI.

I’m curious how many of you are using EBSCO alternative coverage in your PCI activations. Are y’all going to continue with those moving forward?

I did a little Googling and came across this Q&A from SUNY:

https://slcny.libguides.com/cdi-task-force/questions

SUNY: Alternate coverage: you've recommended keeping PCI EBSCO alternative coverage packages active for searching. Campuses have already started asking why they need to keep these packages active if everything that's full-text is covered for searching. Thoughts for how we should answer this?

Ex Libris: You do not need to keep alternative access databases active to make EBSCO content discoverable. Anything full-text, including EBSCO, will be searchable via the CDI metadata Index. However, if you would like to search your PCI "alternative coverage" databases in your expanded search, you can keep them active for search.

So should we deactivate those alternative coverage databases before May?

-Lesley
