[Wactclc-primo] [EXTERNAL*]-Re: [External] View online vs. Links with Science Direct

OK. Thanks, Naoko and Wade. I still have questions:

  1. How come the second article in the list goes directly to the full-text in Elsevier even though it says ProQuest in the Permalink?
  2. Why do they both show up and they didn't get FRBR-ized in the results list?
  3. I don't understand how future updates from Elsevier might not be allowed to take effect if you set the Crossref enabled to No and add Yes to the Shibboleth parser parameter field.

Thanks. Still feeling really dense about this...

I looked at the XML debugger output of both PCI records (one is a ProQuest record and the other one is an Elsevier record) and noticed that the Elsevier record contains DOI information while the ProQuest record doesn't. So, even though Crossref is supported for ScienceDirect, the ProQuest record isn't using DOI when linking to the article. I remembered there were issues with DOI linking to ScienceDirect in the past and found a workaround on ALMA-L: in the Linking tab, set the "Crossref enabled" to "No" and add "Yes" to the Shibboleth parser parameter field. This way, the Alma link resolver ignores the DOI information in the Elsevier record, and the link goes directly to the article as the link in the ProQuest record does. It seemed to work for me.

However, because of the history of DOI linking issues, I decided not to use this workaround to allow future updates from Elsevier to take effect. Although the search result page requires one more click, I think it's clear that the full text is available.

  1. The behavior of the 'view online' link presented in brief results is configurable under:

Alma Admin / Fulfillment / Direct Linking

You can have the link go to the full record display (as SVC is currently configured), directly to the article, or directly to the article if only one source is available.

I recommend having the link go to the full record display first, so the user has a chance to see the citation, and other info about the citation, like which providers hold the material.

But you can adjust to your preference.

  1. In full record display:

  1. The link(s) under "view online" is generated by the Alma link resolver, based on the citation's metadata (title, author, etc). You may get more than one link, depending on how many activated collections contain the cited material

  1. The link in the 'links' section is a hardcoded link contained in the article citation from the PCI. You can think of it like an 856 URL within the article citation, or like a vendor-specific permalink. It only appears if such links are contained in the citations submitted by the content holders.

Oh, and the link out to ProQuest is an abstract only, not the full-text. It just gets weirder and weirder...

Hi Amy:

I checked and my parser parameters and URL are the same as yours. However, when I look at the Permalink for the first one (the one that doesn't go directly to the article), I get:
https://sbctc-skagit.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/fulldisplay?docid=elsevier_sdoi_10_1016_j_brat_2018_05_005&context=PC&vid=01STATEWA_SKAGIT:SKAGIT&search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&tab=Everything&lang=en

The second one, that does go directly to the article:

https://sbctc-skagit.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/fulldisplay?docid=proquest2099978583&context=PC&vid=01STATEWA_SKAGIT:SKAGIT&search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&tab=Everything&lang=en

I notice the first one has a docid of elsevier and the second one has a docid of proquest. The second one has the View Online link going to Elsevier and the link in the Links section goes to ProQuest.

I'm guessing this is something I'm going to have to send to Salesforce...

Elena, I don't have an answer but I when I search for that article in Primo, I have two records for it. Both are for the article in Science Direct, but they look different, and one takes me straight there and one doesn't. Maybe this will at least help troubleshoot?

[cid:image001.jpg at 01D57F8B.BA2CAF50]

For the top one, selecting "Full Text Available" does what your example does (not straight into the article). For the bottom one, selecting "Full Text Available" opens directly into the article. Here are the differences in the Primo records:

[cid:image002.jpg at 01D57F8B.BA2CAF50] [cid:image003.jpg at 01D57F8B.BA2CAF50]

In my Health & Life Sciences service, I have a parser parameter of host=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ & prefsite = sd & shib=$$SHIBBOLETH & u_shib=$$U_SHIBBOLETH

In the Health & Life Sciences collection (edit, Additional tab) I have a Level URL override in place that is https://www.sceincedirect.com

Not sure if any of that is useful...

Hi all:

I know that we've talked about this issue with Credo Reference titles, and I can't remember exactly why this is, but with our Science Direct articles, when we click on the View Online link, it takes us to a page where we then have to click one more time to get into the article:

[cid:image005.png at 01D57F8B.BA2CAF50]

Gets this:

[cid:image006.png at 01D57F8B.BA2CAF50]

However, when we click on the Links section at the bottom of the record, we do directly to the article:

[cid:image007.jpg at 01D57F8B.BA2CAF50]

Takes us directly into the articel:

[cid:image008.jpg at 01D57F8B.BA2CAF50]

Can someone please explain again why that is and if there's anything I can do to change it?

Thanks!

Elena
