Actually, to see an example of what PubMed linkout (local) looks like in the real world, go to Olympics' PubMed URL (without the proxy, so you can actually get in):

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?myncbishare=waolymplib

Then, search for this example article, using the assigned DOI:

10.1016/j.ajog.2013.07.014

In the upper right, you'll see an Olympic College logo (highlighted below), that you can click on.

Based on my understanding, the metadata currently on file at PubMed for Olympic came directly from the vendor (Elsevier?) rather than from Alma. So Olympic's PubMed linkout's only cover ScienceDirect currently.

But with a full PubMed publishing file from Alma, you could link back to all of your available holdings from their respective citations in PubMed.

What is your institutionally-specific PubMed URL?

For example, Olympic's is:

If you do have outside linkout set up, I'm sure others would be interested in taking a look at what the "retail" side looks like to users.

PubMed Linkout might make a good summer initiative.

For those not familiar, PubMed Linkout simply allows people searching pubmed to check your library for a journal or article, in the same way you can 'check my library' in Ebsco or ProQuest for a given citation, which searching the dedicated vendor interfaces for those collections.

To use PubMed linkout, you first need to establish an account for your library:

Amy and Nicole may already be aware of this, but there are two ways to handle linking from PubMed to Primo (or to any library catalog, really), once you have a linkout account:

Local Linkout
Outside Linkout

The following info is based on my current understanding of the process.

Local

Local Linkout involves generating an XML file of your holdings, and providing that file to PubMed, via the library linkout too at pubmed.

The "Publishing to PubMed" profile in Alma can generate the XML file.

The file is published to an FTP server. The first time, you have to publish the file to a nonPubMed FTP file. Once PubMed has verified the file is in the right format, subsequent holdings files can be published straight to PubMed, on a scheduled basis.

Outside

With outside linking, you provide your OpenURL link to PubMed, via your  linkout account at PubMed.

One this about using Outside linking, PubMed requires that links that don't resolve to a journal or article need to then redirect to a pre-filled ILL form.

(I'm not sure, given the use of WorldShare ILL, rather anyone would be able to meet this requirement.)

I'm in the process of helping Olympic generate a file from the PubMed Publishing Profile, and we'll report on our progress as things proceed.

I tried to get this working last summer and I could never get it to work. We don't have a FTP server, and they wanted me to download some set of records that they could never explain how to get the records. There is a PubMed Publishing Profile, but again I could get that to work.

I don't have any prior experience with this setup, but it appears that you can set up a PubMed publishing profile in Alma, as described here:

This profile should output an XML file in the format required by LinkOut. (You'll need to point the profile at an FTP server at your institution.)

Assuming you have a LinkOut account set up with NLM, you would just need to get that XML file to NLM, and they would load it up for you.

Once those records were loaded, users should be able to find content in PubMed, and if you have access to the content, they'll get a link taking them to the appropriate record in Primo.

Have any of our libraries set up PubMed LinkOut since going live on Alma?  We use to have it set up but it no longer is working since we migrated.  A librarian who is no longer here set it up the first time.  I need to get this up and running quickly because we teach a CINAHL/PubMed class for Nursing students each summer.   It looks thoroughly confusing (lots of FTPing files back and forth?) so I'd love to hear others' perceptions of the process, particularly with Alma.  I know it's been discussed recently on the national listserv but it's still clear as mud to me.
