The newspaper facet won't be affected. That is, it will continue to be available.

I see. Thanks for that explanation, Wade. One more question, if we do not activate the newspaper search, the newspaper article facet will still be there in Primo, right? Right now, for our purposes, I see using the facet as a more efficient way to isolate newspaper articles because it's right there in the main results screen. I'd rather not direct students to a separate place to search...

Based on my current understanding, if you were to activate the newspaper search, then yes, ProQuest Newspaper PCI (ie, full-text articles) content would only show up in the newspaper search, not in other searches.

The newspaper search configuration is totally optional, and you don't have to do anything if you don't want it.

I could see the newspaper search being useful if you subscribe to a lot of newspaper content (newsbank etc).

In the same way that some open access collections (I'm talking to you, hathi trust) can overwhelm some search results, I imagine that having a lot of newspaper content activated might overwhelm some searches.

For example, a week from now, a search for 'anthony bourdain' might give you several pages of newspaper articles in your search results (if your institution subscribes to lots of newspaper content), and the desired content (books, videos) might get buried in those results.

An option that would be similar, but more interesting to me, would be an 'open access' search scope. To me, that would support some important use cases, both philosophical (for the OA enthusiast crowd) and practical (people who don't want to deal with authentication hoops).

I'm sure the newspaper search has some very valid use-cases out there, but maybe just not in our institutions.

So, does that mean that articles in our ProQuest Newspapers subscription, for example, would still show up in the regular Primo search if we enabled the newspaper search function?

Then, my question is, why would I enable that if it would be just one more place for students to search for newspaper articles? If I'm going to have a separate newspaper search, then I would think that I would want all of them (part of my subscriptions and those in PCI) to be searched together. I guess I don't understand the benefit of this function...

Lesley,

I noticed the same thing when I was reading about the newspaper search (which will be available later in the summer). If you choose to enable newspaper search, it does remove PCI newspaper content from other searches. Newspaper title records cataloged in Alma are not affected by enabling newspaper search.

And, based on my reading of the FAQs, the newspaper search is opt in, and is not going to be mandatory or required.

What configuration options are available for the new Newspaper Search interface?

Apart from enabling and disabling Newspaper Search, you will also be able to control the display of Featured Newspapers on the Newspaper Search page. This section will be turned on by default, but it will only display after you have uploaded newspapers of your choice to be featured. For information on how enable and configure Featured Newspapers, see Configuring Featured Newspapers<https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Primo/Product_Documentation/050New_Primo_User_Interface/Configuring_the_Newspaper_Search_Interface#Configuring_Featured_Newspapers>.
One potential advantage of the newspaper search is that it includes additional newspaper content not currently available in the PCI. Though, the FAQs don't say what that content might be.

Newspaper Search will also provide access to many new newspaper collections that were not previously offered through Primo Central.

Hi everyone,

I'm curious to hear what you all think about this design change! To be honest, I think it's another example of Ex Libris favoring four-year institutions over two-year institutions. Very few assignments at Pierce College would exclude newspaper articles.

It sounds like it will be activated and non-optional by end of year. But someone please correct me if I misunderstood!

Best,
Lesley
