Wade,
I did create an analytics report to use as a backup option, to compare what's on the shelf manually.  However I can't quite find the right "status" to use.  "Base status" just gives us three options (item in place, item not in place, none) but I can't find the status to use that would tell us missing, loaned, etc.  This is the closest I've gotten:

Did you scan all of the barcodes with the PERIODICAL call number?

Or just "American Artist".

Since in the shelf report you're specifying the range PERIODICAL to PERIODICAL, you would need to scan all barcodes in that range to get reasonable results.

The alternative would be to just use analytics, and generate a list of the periodicals you want to inventory. In the analytics report (use the Physical Inventory subject area), include call num, barcode, title, current status.

The analytics report would tell you where Alma "thinks" each item is (checked out, lost, missing, on shelf, etc). You can compare that list to what you actually have on the shelf, to see where Alma doesn't reflect reality.

Have you tried setting up the shelf report range like this, and then selecting your file...

If so, what error message do you get when you submit the job.

We are trying to inventory our periodicals using Shelf Report.  Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working for us.  We created an excel file of barcodes, opened Shelf Report, and on our first try defined the inventory as a "Range."  We realized that this won't work because the periodicals all have the same call number - PERIODICALS. Then we defined inventory as a "Set."  We tried to run our excel file as one of these sets Items by location and Physical Journal title and the results were the same, "Items on shelf but out of range/set".  When looking at a list periodicals, the only difference besides the barcode is the description, which gives us volume and issue number - otherwise everything else is the same.  So unless I can figure out how to maybe create a set that could work with shelf reporting, I am stumped and could use a little help.
