[LIBRARYDIR] [EXTERNAL] Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: Orbis Cascade Alliance?

Hello all,
First I am agnostic in this discussion. We subscribe to Cinahl too, and pay
all our ebsco resources through the Alliance. I just have some thoughts
and past experiences lingering in the back of my mind giving me some
cautious apprehension.
Thought one:
Not so very long ago, at a college that was part of the alliance, many
schools were cutting resources, and when the alliance subscription got down
to 3 (for an engineering resource) the alliance could no longer get a bulk
discount for that resource. On our own, the price spiked and I cut it. The
alliance provides the e-resource consortia because it is part of their
central mission of shared resources.
Thought 2:
I was on the Alliance Council at the time that they were doing the first
renegotiation with ExLibris. At that time the alliance was a mover among
consortia. Exlibris in that negotiation was quite honest that we were not
as big of a mover as we thought we were. The power of 37 was not enough to
move the needle on negotiations. A library leader came in toward the end of
my tenure on the alliance council, bringing up some of the questions
brought up here. The big why? Is this really saving us money?
Analysis:
As I watch this conversation unfold I have wondered about the central
purpose of the LLC. Is it sharing of resources? Is it supporting work
plans for the IC? What is the long term purpose? and is starting our own
shared resource cooperative something that is supportive of that purpose?
On this specific resource, sure, sounds like most of us subscribe in some
form, and we do so through the Alliance. I am also sure George would work
his magic to price match for us. But holistically, outside of this
instance, let's really think about the purpose of what we are proposing and
how it supports the member colleges of the LLC and SBCTC. What happens in a
year or even three years when this conversation is forgotten and we all
wonder again, why? Is this saving us money?
