We had this happen. The laptop turned up at a pawn shop. So, the store returned it and took the loss.

Was the item a book or a laptop? I assumed it was a laptop with that price tag.

Hi Claire, we've had this happen (without the dollar amount as a confounding factor).

Generally we've already deaccessioned the book and replaced it (if we decided to). We have simply stamped the book as withdrawn and given it back to them.

Now if the book is an extremely rare or valuable copy, I imagine that I'd talk to the foundation about reimbursing the patron and taking the book back into our possession. Theoretical.

Hi all,

What would you do if someone contacted you and told you they bought an item from a second-hand shop but then realized the item had your library's barcode on it? They ask you what you want to do and they let you know they spent about $90 on it. I know everyone is getting ready for the holiday! Any ideas appreciated!
