We just tell them that items discarded from the collection regularly show up in secondhand shops, it’s perfectly legal and okay, and that we are glad to hear that they continue to have use and value to their new owners.

At one job where this happened regularly, we maintained a map noting where our discarded books now “live” and we’d ask if they would like to be a pin on the map and where to place it. Sometimes we’d send them pictures of the map if they wanted :)

Hi all,

What would you do if someone contacted you and told you they bought an item from a second-hand shop but then realized the item had your library's barcode on it? They ask you what you want to do and they let you know they spent about $90 on it. I know everyone is getting ready for the holiday! Any ideas appreciated!
