The Seattle Colleges have been closed between Christmas and New Years for the past few years. Staff are required to use paid time. An MOU with WFSE gives them the option of earning comp time to cover 3 days rather than use vacation or personal leave.

Greg, CPTC is in a similar boat.

This past year, our executive team decided to close the college for the week between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, and staff were expected to use their PTO.  We’re doing the same thing this year, so it may now be a fixture of the college’s schedule.

I’ve raised it as an equity issue, and I was told that staff who don’t wish to use their PTO or take unpaid leave can telework – which, of course, means extra work for supervisors who must find telework tasks for staff who don’t normally work from home.  I’ve also been told that we can’t just give people the time off because that would be “gifting” state resources.

Our unions are in conversation with our leadership about this as we speak, so perhaps things will change.  Or not…

That is unfortunate. Vacation, sick leave, and personal days are part of your benefits package, and vacation and personal days especially should be there for you to use when you want to.

For the school to close down and say when you have to use your personal time off, or not get paid, is bad management as far as I am concerned. And sick leave should be reserved for illness, not as more days off.

I’m sorry your clerks have to face those choices. ☹

The LWTech library is open during breaks, with limited hours, since only our Techs are working on breaks (with the exception of our faculty/in-service days when librarians are on contract and agree to be on campus). The limited hours tend to be around 8am-430pm.

The Fall to Winter break (in December) is slightly different in that the college closes for about a week. I’m not sure how it’s written in the contract or job description, but the Techs essentially are required to take off during the closed campus days, and they have historically used a combination of personal and sick time depending on what they’re doing on those days. I believe they could take unpaid leave as well.

We close for portions of breaks, but remain open for a few days after and a few days before quarters end and begin. When we're closed, though, we're "here but not here," typically working on projects that take people away from the service desks. We do make appointments with people during these times as needed and as we're able to, but these are also times when staff tend to go on vacation 🙂

At BBCC we have enough staff that are 12 month employees that we stay open during breaks as a service to the community. Plus we haven't found a safe way to return tech without doing face to face. We start checking out textbooks and tech two weeks before the quarter starts too so we need to be open for that too.


We are continuing to offer curbside service, which some users really like, and it is literally out our back door so easy for us too.  Well, except for when it is over 100 degrees.


We do close the building for a week or two each summer for deep cleaning and maintenance but still offer curbside.   We've also started putting a wireless doorbell at our front doors when we are closed but have staff here so folks can return tech etc.

Grays Harbor is traditionally closed most of the break, but we’re unofficially open as much as possible. So if two of us are here the doors are open, even if the signage hours say we are closed. A lot of this is due to not having the staffing to be open while people are taking vacations, and being realistic about trying to set days off a year in advance.

We are doing half days for the week after the quarter ends, and will probably be open full time the week before classes begin except for all campus training event. We are always available for appointments, even if closed.
