Hi All. The security function in our gates stopped worked several years ago. We are planning to remove them all together this year. Our front door is very visible from our reference and circulation desks, so I don’t think we will replace it.

We are exploring other options for patron counting too, because like many of you, our gate counter isn’t realistic, with to many other comings and goings.

Our circulation supervisor and I had a conversation last week about gate counts / security gates.

We both agreed that the gate counts don’t provide the library any information about library users (too much in and out unrelated to library use – for example our bathrooms are outside the gates).

As for security, you can easily bypass our gates completely to come in or leave the library so it just gives the illusion of security.

If anything happened to the gates, I don’t think we would prioritize replacing them.

We have a bibliotecha gate, but we discontinued the service contract. I would have it removed, but our facilities staff is overwhelmed and doesn’t want to deal with it. Yet.

I am considering removing our gate; we have several departments in the library so it’s impossible to get an accurate count. I agree with Greg that working with Bibliotheca is challenging, at best.

We have two gates through Bibliotheca. Working with them was a nightmare. Our assigned rep was terrible at communication. Incorrect information was provided regarding installation. And the actual installation involved someone we hadn’t spoken with prior to the meeting, with installation requirements that we were not aware of. We were also never told that the data collection that the gates provide, in addition to displaying on a small and relatively inaccessible physical box near the gate, is only available in a database/installation view if subscribed to a multi-thousand-dollar subscription service.

I would highly advise staying clear of Bibliotecha if possible.

Our Circ staff are very concerned about library materials theft and are even more concerned about our reserves materials walking out the door. How did the librarians and circ come to an agreement about this? Our current resolutions are that reserve items will be checked out to students so we will know who has it, but it doesn’t get returned another student who needs it won’t be able to access it. The other resolution is stating up front with faculty who place their materials on reserve that there is a possibility the item won’t be returned.

New question – how many of you have security gates and what brand?

The security alarm has quit working.  Our gates are 20 years old so we will probably need to replace they system.  I have read that security gates are not being used as consistently anymore, and Heath notes that they are looking at getting rid of theirs.
